Last year, I had the privilege of participating in Grow Asia Academy for Sustainable Investing. It was an extremely fascinating experience, but largely theoretical as many of the theories covered seemed difficult for me to apply, given the types of investments we typically made. However, it wasn't until my recent visit to Western Australia that everything clicked for me as I saw how these theories could be put into practise. The company that helped me do that was Fremantle Seaweed. Standing on the beach in Fremantle, listening to Chris De Cuyper describe his company and the various considerations they had to address while laying the foundations of his new seaweed farm, greatly enhanced my understanding of the theories that I learn. It made me appreciate concepts like land tenure, environmental impact monitoring, and stakeholder mapping in a more practical light. While our previous investments were largely tech-based and less focused on these considerations. However, as our investment mandate evolves in the coming years, this short walk on the beach will remain a memorable reminder of the types of investments we aspire to make in the future. Exciting news in the realm of sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation! 🌱 The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has recently given the green light to 48 FAO-led projects, totaling $2.9 billion, aimed at fostering a sustainable agrifood systems transformation. These initiatives, benefiting 4.2 million people across five regions globally, will have a significant impact, including the restoration of over 474,000 hectares of land, improvement of practices on more than 24 million hectares of land and marine habitats, and mitigation of 133 million metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. Led by FAO Deputy Director-General Maria Helena Semedo, these projects represent a pivotal step towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals while ensuring global food security and promoting resilient agriculture practices. 🌍 Key highlights include: 🌱 Three new FAO-led programs focusing on food systems, oceans, and ecosystem restoration. 🌊 The Food Systems Integrated Program (FSIP) aims to transform agrifood systems sustainably across 32 countries. 🐟 The Clean and Healthy Ocean Integrated Program targets reducing land-based ocean pollution in nine Large Marine Ecosystems. 💧 The Central Asia Water and Land Nexus Program seeks to enhance water security and improve rural livelihoods in critical river basins. Moreover, FAO will support individual projects focusing on biodiversity conservation, climate change adaptation, and sustainable land and water management in various countries. These initiatives underscore FAO's commitment to environmental sustainability and inclusive development. 🌱🚜 What everyone should know about sustainability💰 🌍 Sustainability is no longer just about environmental safety - it's a three-pillar framework that encompasses economic, environmental, and social aspects. My recent experience in Brazil revealed the importance of bridging the gap in society and educating about sustainability in agribusiness. While there is a growing openness among farmers towards sustainable agriculture ( ➡️check my last video -The truth behind the Brazilian agriculture famers👨🌾🌽🚜🐮) there remains much work to be done in Brazil and worldwide to further advance this crucial approach. The focus is on finding a balance that integrates all pillars and creates a sustainable plan for future generations. Communication is key in facilitating dialogue and understanding among diverse stakeholders. Let's work towards a harmonious coexistence of business and environmental responsibility! #sustainability #agribusiness #environmentalresponsibility #regenerativeagriculture

Agribusiness Consultant | Helping transform the agricultural industry to be more sustainable and profitable | 2022 Kellogg Rural Leader Scholar
In a few recent discussions about New Zealand's agricultural industry, I've been exploring ideas on how we can reward current and future farmers for their environmentally positive actions on the farm. One concept that keeps coming to mind is accounting for the natural capital of a farm and leveraging it to promote better farm management practices and the preservation or restoration of natural ecosystems. Natural capital, in short, encompasses the vegetation, soil, water, and native ecosystems within a specific land holding. If farmers are able to account for the ecosystem assets within their system, they could be rewarded for nature-positive actions (on top of the production benefits) and sharing the cost-burden of maintaining or improving natural ecosystems on their farms. To make this concept a reality, we would need to establish an accounting system for natural capital which is standardised & quantifiable assessments of the physical state of environmental assets including soils, native vegetation and wildlife, waterways and downstream effects on ocean ecosystems. These measures of environmental conditions could then help us determine whether actions are improving or degrading natural capital of a farm or group of farms, which could help guide investment in sustainable land management practices into the future. The accounting for the natural capital of a farm would enable landowners, policy makers, investors and customers to link the condition of environmental assets with economic decision making. The result could include more favourable loan terms with banks and greater access to investment for projects supporting sustainable land management or land use change. I may be barking up the wrong tree here but future access to international markets and premium brands, if not already, will require environmental and sustainability reporting. This requirement is likely to increase. Accounting for natural capital at the farm scale will become increasingly crucial to correlate environmental outcomes with productivity and financial performance while demonstrating environmental responsibility. However, the tools needed to measure and report the current status and long-term trends of natural capital on a farm are lacking in New Zealand. This isn't a new idea but it is a system that I think could be very beneficial for our agricultural industry and the natural environment. Instead of using regulation to achieve outcomes, this could be a carrot that farmers are encouraged to opt in to. #SustainableFarming #naturalcapital

✅In line with WAJ call for a Global Ban on Factory Farming led by CIWF, Plant-Based diets are promoted for sustainability to 'save resources', with 'Strong economic incentives' to be adopted 'for food industry and consumers'. A key evolution in the new Sustainable Developement Report! 👉 Read the 2024 Sustainable Developement Report here: https://lnkd.in/dxicmn4i "Currently, 38% of total cropland and 30% of water for agriculture is used for animal feed, so limiting protein consumption to recommended levels and increasing the share of proteins derived from plants saves resources. Many countries have taken the opportunity of renewing their Dietary Guidelines to promote healthy and sustainable diets, including Brazil, Germany, and Sweden. This effort must be pursued in other countries and accompanied by strong economic incentives for the food industry and consumers." ❌ Despite this way forward, "animals" are only referred to as "animal stocks", "animal products" or "animal-based products". Still a hard work to do before animals to be protected for themselves in view of this reifying approach... ❓ Discover why WAJ asks to end Factory-Farming Zoocide as a priority to End Animal Crimes here: https://lnkd.in/d5NyUPvc ➡Support CIWF call to End.it in signing here! https://ciwf.end.it/sign/ #PlantProteins #SustainableDevelopment #BanFactoryFarming #CIWF #Endit #EndAnimalCrimes #WorldAnimalJustice
