The investment consortium includes new investors: ICIG Ventures, Unconventional Ventures, and Joyance Partners. Welcome on board.   We are incredibly proud to have been part of Cellugy's journey from the very beginning. It all started 18 months ago in Aarhus when we met two brilliant researchers, Isabel Álvarez-Martos from Spain and Deby Fapyane, Ph.D., from Indonesia, along with Parun Sihombing. They had a visionary solution to tackle the problem of microplastics and synthetic polymers. Reflecting on my stage talk at DTU Startup Day 2024. Together with Anna Lundin from Norrsken VC and Tommy Ahlers from Look Up Ventures we illuminated the path of building tech champions in Europe. Our key messages were: - Deep tech is a big answer, if not THE answer, to the problems defining our societies (locally and globally), and - Deep tech has its own development journey, hence knowing the uniqe deep tech metrics and inflection points are essential   We also discussed the need for deep tech founders to move beyond technology to convey founder conviction... ...and this was almost a perfect segway from Troels Schönfeldt, Connie Hedegaard and Jes Broeng’s passionate debate on encouraging researchers to spin their groundbreaking ideas into society and tackle societal challenges. Today is DTU Startup Day and I look forward to speak about how we build deep tech champions in Europe. I will be joined by investors Anna Lundin from Norrsken VC and Tommy Ahlers from Look Up Ventures. The three of us come with different backgrounds as well as different perspectives on science based innovation, but I expect us all to be bullish on the potential of deep tech! In our panel talk we will wrap our heads around the journey from lab to market, including how we bridge the gap from university spin-out to the venture journey. All in all, some perspectives on how we build ecosystems fostering bigger, better, and stronger deep tech champions in Europe. With DTU being Danish champion in converting research into innovation - as previously found in an innovation analysis - expectations are high for the event overall, and in particular the +60 participating early-stage companies. Is 2024 going to be the year of debt? GreenTech - and in particular deep tech type companies - is showing its ability to attract alternative financing. The Q1-24 report from the Nordic CleanTech Coalition showed an unparalled level of investments in Nordic greentech, driven by debt financing. The total investment amount for the quarter - combining grants, equity, and debt - was almost twice the amount recorded for the entire previous year! Does this mean that debt financing is suddenly available for all venture companies? The answer is a straight no. One thing is the company type, like asset light vs tangible asset and revenue generating vs non-revenue generating. But just as important to understand is how you approach VC capital investors vs debt capital investors. Making it a little extreme the first wants to hear about big visions and promises, and the latter requires you to talk another language, including terms like risk management, financial budgetting, and guarantees. So, if you are an early stage company and you want to consider going down the debt lane, ensure to have someone close to the company who knows the language and how to go about asking for such kind of capital. It is not for everyone, and it requires someone! The report is once again made by the Nordic CleanTech Coalition backed by Breakthrough Energy . Just gave an interview to Sifted. The leading European media wanted to know more about the quantum potential in Denmark as they had been noticing extensive investments being made in quantum and high computing activities in Denmark recently. In PSV DeepTech quantum is one of our emerging technology focus areas and we are happy to be part of such a strong quantum ecosystem in the making. A story to be told - railroads and hydrogen pipes. They are two very different technology developments over time, but they are likely to share a common story for future prosperity and growth. Understanding a story like this is relevant as a raise is going on right now with massive investments into a new essential part of the future energy infrastructure, namely the hydrogen economy. And Denmark is leaning in from a Nordic perspective. Based in Denmark I follow this raise closely both as part of the board of Dynelectro, an innovative company working with green hydrogen, but also as a Danish citizen listening in on national investments being announced on a frequent basis these days.  - Most recent Yara Growth Ventures, an investment arm of Norwegian Yara International, last month announced its investment in Dynelectro as they see a Danish company like Dynelectro being key in enabling the hydrogen economy. - Earlier this month the Danish government agreed to finance a hydrogen pipeline network at an estaimted +2 bEUR cost, going from the Northern part of Jutland and down to the German border. A socalled "hydrogen backbone” enabling the power-to-x potential which has intensified the past few years (I have written a few posts about this earlier). - And with Danish renewable energy capacity exceeding far more than what Danish households and businesses can consume, hydrogren or other power-to-x products can be a new export adventure for Denmark and the businesses in the hydrogen economy (ref. the 6GW additional offshore wind just announced this week). Back to the story. In the 1800s the establishment of thousands of miles of railroad across USA ensured integration of the country and provided new economic opportunities, in particular close to the railroad itself. Towns were built, jobs were generated, and businesses arose. Walking the floor at our portfolio company Dynelectro. Thank you Sune Lilbaek and Søren Højgaard Jensen for taking us around and showing the future of Power-to-X (PtX). Being investor, board member, or c-level management we all need to spend much more time walking the floor of all areas of the business in which we are part of. Obtaining the true understanding of a business and how it operates is crucial in effectively guiding the direction for where the company can and should go. This approach is not only a good thing for the investor, but also the owners of the company. For that same reason we in PSV DeepTech see ourselves just as much as co-owners of a company rather than 'just' investors.
