This week Liz Gross, Ph.D. attended the Mackinac Roundtable on Talent held by the Michigan Colleges Alliance. Liz presented with Mike Moss, CAE on informing institutional transformation with social intelligence. They shared how public confidence in higher education is at an all-time low, with public perception and online word-of-mouth is impacting enrollment, student experience, and revenue. Yet many presidents oversee planning and transformation initiatives without a data-driven, audience-centric approach. After Brandon Busteed shared the ILO finding that 20% of age 15-23 worldwide are NEET (not in employment, education, or training), I realized many people are unfamiliar with the term, and what stories exist in the NEET community. Some may assume a NEET is lazy and uneducated—when you look into their shared online experience, you’ll see this isn’t true. Many NEETs successfully completed college yet are not participating in the workforce for a variety of reasons. 42,000 people belong to the NEET subreddit, making it among the top 3% of Reddit communities by size. In the last 30 days, 8,371 posts and comments were contributed by 1,813 users. Following are some insights from the Reddit NEET community, particularly about higher education. It’s always worth it to listen to a community to learn more about their experience before presuming you know what they need. •Individuals use r/NEET to seek advice, support, or guidance on living their lives. There are discussions dedicated to sharing and encouraging personal progress and improvement. •The conversation includes people with varying levels of education, from those who have been NEET since they were teenagers to those with multiple degrees who feel they are ill-prepared to use that degree in the “real world.” •They seem more likely to graduate than drop out of college. In a recent community poll, 28% of respondents said they “got a typical 4 years degree/associates.” 7% said they had graduate degrees. 12.6% dropped out of college. •They rarely talk about higher education—only 2% of conversations in the last 30 days mentioned “college” or “university.” •Mental health concerns are shared frequently, and include social anxiety, autism, bipolar disorder, depression, and suicidal ideation. •They receive their financial support from “NEETBux” (e.g., unemployment, disability support, social security) or familial support. "Social media has made things significantly worse for current presidents." https://lnkd.in/gMsQ_J3c Those exact words aren't in this article, but it is one of the statements made in the third paragraph, amongst others. And it makes my blood boil. Never in history have we had the ability to know what so many people are thinking/feeling at any moment like we do now. Nor has a leader been able to communicate so freely with their geographically diverse constituents. Presidents (and their boards) should be seeing social media as an insight engine to answer key questions about audiences, markets, and their institution's reputation.
