Fantastic article by Philippa Nuttall featuring Ryan Cameron, chief investment officer of Regenerate Asset Management. ‘A process, not a status’ Ryan Cameron is chief investment officer at London-based Regenerate Asset Management. It manages the Regenerate European Sustainable Agriculture Fund, which makes investments generally of around €10mn-€40mn in European farm businesses using a regenerative approach. Cameron too is clear that measuring regenerative agriculture is not a quick and simple exercise that can be dealt with through a couple of simple metrics. “Regenerative agriculture is a process, not a status like organic farming,” he tells Sustainable Views. “It is not about box-ticking, but about principles. Carbon is only one of the considerations. We need to look at a wide span of metrics and agro-ecological outcomes over time.” He cites the non-profit Savory Institute’s ecological outcome verification as an example of such an approach. Any verification for regenerative agriculture needs to be centred around the holistic improvement of soil health Ryan Cameron, Regenerate Asset Management Regenerate’s way of dealing with carbon has been to seek the “highest standard of verification” with standards organisations such as Verra, says Cameron. Over the past few days, I’ve been visiting lots of #farms in Europe and seeing the #regeneration and #destruction that management practices can have in the #land, #nature and environment. These practices are relatively unknown to the consumer and the huge gap between regenerative practices and industrial agriculture as well as the #positiveimpact that regenerative management can have! How do we create #impact in food systems? It starts with the health of farms #soils. Lots of positive externalities come from restoring soils. Soil health is an #outcome and regenerative practices have to be outcome driven. I’ll be talking about creating ‘impact in food systems and regenerative agriculture’ at the Impact Investor Global Summit in London Tuesday next week alongside fellow panelist’s Rosie Wardle, Carli Roth, Matteo Squilloni and Charles Avery. As the harsh reality of warmer and wetter winters hits agriculture, we are seeing more and more farmers in the UK and in Europe turning to #regenerativeagriculture practices to protect against #flood and #drought and boost #foodsecurity.   Pioneering farmers are rethinking the traditional post-war plough/fertilise/grow/repeat model and instead focusing on techniques to restore and build soil health. So-called #regenerative farms are investing in existing plants each year - valuing precious root systems rather than ploughing for example. Regenerative techniques are supporting #farmers across the country and have a climate benefit for us all.    Vitally, #healthysoil stores much larger volumes of water, preventing floods and protecting against droughts. While it might seem hard to imagine a dryer landscape after months of floods, hotter summers are also more likely - droughts are the next threat that we see on the horizon.   Regenerate Asset Management is a specialist private equity investor, investing in farms transitioning to regenerative agriculture across Europe. The co-founders previously worked at Impax, the climate positive private equity investor. Regenerate Outcomes is a sister business which supports the regenerative farming community with #education and opportunities to share knowledge.   Case studies of farmers ‘Meet the farmer’, adopting regenerative agriculture practices are available here - https://lnkd.in/e7BYHg9H. Landing back from #nyc and a great week at the Global AgInvesting conference, it’s clear that the weather has changed since last week and the presence of the winters #flooding has started to subside. When we ran a farming academy in Northumberland with the Understanding Ag, LLC - Experts in Regenerative Ag in October 2022, one of the profound comments was around the suitability for #agriculture and #regenerativeagriculture in the UK’s climate. Yesterday WIRED published an article on ‘the rise of the carbon farmer’ which provides a positive lens on the potential impact of agriculture to sequester carbon. If soil health beneficial practices are used to generate regenerative outcomes. Quoting UK #organic farmer Patrick Holden. “My farm’s been farmed organically for 51 years,” says Patrick Holden “I’ve built up soil carbon, my operation is now carbon-negative—if I was to switch to intensive methods then theoretically I could burn up that carbon stock. But if I was paid to be a carbon steward, I’m not going to do that.” Having experienced one of the wettest winters on record, let’s not forget the value of slowing down and filtering water with #healthysoils. There's been a lot of discussion about #regenerativeagriculture over the past few years since the launch of the film #kisstheground and increasing activities in the sector with increasing focus on soil health. Some lively debate and different approaches. Regenerate Outcomes has been a pioneer in the UK, bringing global regenerative knowledge and financing to farms locally. Investing in agriculture with a view to restore soil health is the next scalable #impact theme. It reminds us of the early days of the #energytransition. One question we hear a lot is - "How do we invest in regenerative agriculture" with a risk adjusted real asset focus. I'm excited to say that i'll be participating on a panel in #NYC next week to discuss exactly this topic at the Global AgInvesting conference in New York on "How to Scale Regenerative Agriculture".
