Apple growers are expressing concerns as high supply and lower demand are resulting in slower sales at lower prices. The USDA forecast that Washington's 2023 apple production would be at 6.7 billion pounds, up 9% from 2022. This is approximately 64% of the national apple production. Conditions were ideal for this crop, one of the best in recent years for Washington, however, prices and sales have dropped. It is exciting to see that #USSoy has achieved another major sustainability goal by ensuring that the U.S. Soy Sustainability Assurance Protocol (SSAP) meets the latest sustainable production standards set by the European Compound Feed Manufacturers’ Federation (FEFAC).    FEFAC’s 2023 Guidelines have upgraded criterion for conversion-free soy as an essential requirement. To meet this standard, soy cannot be grown on converted natural ecosystems.    This is yet another reminder that U.S. Soy is always working to increase transparency and sustainability, including doing more with less. For example, from 1997 to 2017, U.S. forestland increased by 742,000 hectares while cropland decreased by 3.6 million hectares.    The guidelines developed by FEFAC are the soy sourcing transparency standard in Europe. This means that across 27 countries, the SSAP lets customers know that U.S. Soy products meet high standards of good agricultural practices, responsible working conditions, environmental protection measures - and that the SSAP continues to meet all sustainable soy sourcing requirements set by FEFAC.    Read more here:  https://lnkd.in/guGT7EBy

Two U.S. representatives have proposed a bill to the House Committee on Agriculture that addresses U.S. dependency on other countries for imports, including ingredients. Constance Cullman, president and chief executive officer of the American Feed Industry Association, shares how this bill "will help US decision-makers better understand how intrinsically linked our food and feed supply is with China’s input manufacturers as they manage the country’s delicate relationship with China." The bill, Securing American Agriculture Act (H.R. 8003), currently has the support of 18 other members in the House. This video from the lifesaving group which U.S. farmers fund — WISHH (The World Initiative for Soy in Human Health) — deserves everyone’s support. The video gives good reasons why the U.S. soybean industry should lead the world in reversing decades of protein declines. Farmers are losing revenue to declining protein. Rainforest and grassland losses are increasing. Natural feed is being replaced by synthetics, which increases livestock emissions. More bushels are required to produce the same amount of protein. The consequences of declining soy protein are not climate smart, regenerative, or sustainable. They are lethal.
