My latest Tony Blair Institute for Global Change edit analyses the results of an EU/UK poll (conducted by YouGov) that gauges the public mood on climate action and achieving net-zero targets. The survey shows that only one-third of respondents believe that their national government will achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, dropping to less than one-fifth in the UK specifically. Focusing on solutions is the only way to get the public on board, requiring a radical approach to unleashing technological innovation and driving its adoption across the globe. While targets are important, the UK should broaden its focus to developing the technology that can not only help it reach those targets but also, crucially, help the world as a whole meet net zero. Amid all the ruckus in the EU regarding carbon removals, the UK just launched a public consultation on the integration of GHG removals (GGRs) in the UK ETS. April's ESG issue is out! The cover story is a wee bit more technical but important - sustainability reports are where companies make public their ESG-related data, and it is used by various parties to judge their performance. Multiple efforts are underway to standardise how these reports are prepared and to get a third party to assure the data, much like financial reports. What's the progress in Malaysia? Another thought I have - mandating assurance and alignment with global reporting standards require extra resources (financial $$). Is this a diversion of efforts to do actual work on the ground? Can this prevent - or does it actually promote - greenwashing? The statement on 9 April from the Board of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), released as part of the process of revising the SBTi’s Net Zero Standard, was a strategic steer to further explore the role that Environmental Attribute Certificates, including carbon credits, may be able to play in climate mitigation. It marks a significant milestone in the global battle against climate change. In the context of the urgent challenge we face to reduce emissions, this is a bold step that will help accelerate corporate climate action around the world.  Countries committed to the Paris Agreement almost a decade ago. They are now discussing the update and ratchetting – increasing the ambition of – their emission reduction plans. Around the world, thousands of companies have made commitments to cut their emissions in half by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050. Yet the money hasn’t followed... North Sea oil and gas is on the ballot in next month's UK election. Labour would stop issuing oil and gas licences. Conservatives would legislate to hold annual licensing rounds. #NoNewFossil fuels is a logical first step in the transition away from fossil fuels all governments agreed to at COP 28. Existing fields produce enough to meet global demand under a 1.5C global warming limit. Exceptionalism abounds. Everyone has a rationale for why their oil and gas is different: energy security, price, carbon efficiency. The fact is, it is easier politically, socially, legally, economically to prevent new projects than shut down existing ones. Public policy and private investment are better focused on building the clean energy future we need.

It is great that the #UK Labour Party is committing to make up for the lost climate goal ground under the conservatives. 💪🏻 Carbon Brief has put together an excellent program. However, it is imperative that site abandonment, remediation, and reclamation of the #NorthSea well, pipeline, and facility sites be a PRIMARY goal to achieve a successful transition. We know we have leakage and sites that are producing when they need not be. In my latest piece for The Secretariat, I write about the need for climate-resilient policies and infrastructure to mitigate the impact of heatwaves. The adverse impact of heatwaves has far-reaching implications, especially for workers working in the informal sector. However, the question is if the country, which turned a blind eye to these people when a pandemic hit the streets, can be empathetic enough to care for them. Many may argue that those were unprecedented times owing to the pandemic. However, climate experts can tell that these too are unprecedented times and the aim should be to do better, not to just survive and outlive it all. Would love to know your feedback! The past two years have seen a parade of journalistic exposes and devastating academic studies revealing flaws and some outright fraud in the voluntary carbon markets (#VCM). This stalled growth of the markets for these #offsets and forced a back-to-basics reform effort along with an alphabet soup of new standards-setting organizations and initiatives. Now some powerful players — from the Biden administration to major global philanthropies — are backing a revival of “high quality” carbon credits. Many companies remain hopeful they can be a meaningful part of their #netzero plans. Plenty of skeptics remain. But with so few viable channels to move money into decarbonization efforts, especially in the developing world, the voluntary carbon markets are getting another chance to prove their worth.
