I spent a large chunk of last year reporting on philanthropy, the non-profit sector and do-goodery in general. The resulting 10-page special report includes reporting from the US, Kenya, India and beyond. The punchline: Philanthrocapitalism is dead. Long live philanthrocapitalism. The Leader, "Just sign the check", is online now and in print Friday: https://lnkd.in/egdtjidT And the full report too:
'It is certainly difficult to make money. But should it be difficult to give away?' The $230 billion sitting in donor advised funds in the USA is one data that certainly seems to answer in affirmative. :-) Look forward to reading the whole report.
Fantastic write-up; congratulations, Avantika Chilkoti. This is one of the best reports I have come across on philanthropy. In many cases - "Philanthrocapitalism" has also empowered Philanthrobureaucracy and Philanthroconsulting, mutually supporting and living off each other. For recipients, dealing with these actors (exercising power with no skin in the game) requires extreme patience and perseverance.
No philanthropy if the rich are taxed appropriately. USA thrives in philanthropy bullshit because American oligharchs don't pay taxes. There's no 1% in the Nordic countries and hence no philanthropy except for the churches...
Really looking forward to reading this on Friday. Did you look at the unrestricted grants movement?
Thank you for this Avantika Chilkoti! You might be interested to hear that both philanthropic fundraisers, consultants and major donors alike are increasingly using AI to conduct due diligence on their counterparts. Is this an area you be interested in finding out more about? I'd love to chat if so!
Love the punchline :) Look forward to reading all of it.
Avantika Chilkoti Looking forward to the piece. Behind a paywall unfortuntely
Can’t wait to check this out. Thanks for your reporting; it is its own form of do-goodery :-)
Thank you Avantika, well done. Looking forward to read the full report.
