You know what’s making me sad today? There was a guy, from the advertising industry, who loads of young women messaged me and others about, because of his dodgy behaviour. An industry magazine even did a story about his dodgy behaviour. He released a statement saying the whole thing was bad for his mental health: because god forbid we ever consider the mental health of the victims. Anyway, he’s doing the conference circuit again. Up on stages, sharing his thoughts, for hundreds to hear. Being booked, by events organisers. Cancel culture isn’t real, folks. Especially when it comes to a certain demographic.
It’s the “genius” effect. I am reading the book Monsters by Claire Dederer and I am on that chapter where she describes how when a person (generally a man) is considered a genius, everything else is forgotten (and forgiven). Or maybe people just don’t want to know if that genius makes them money?
I do think there should be a way to name and shame (repeatedly) and possibly anonymously. Have been discussing this with a few people. Some of those characters you mention have even built their personal brand as voices for equity and mental health. Drives me insane
I'm wrapping my head around the Neil Gaiman revelations....
Had a suspicion on who this might be. Googled. Was right. Have emailed the organisers.
We need an angry reaction button.😡 There's a man I know who has harassed women who work for him, bullied a new mother and then made her sign an NDA, bullied lesbian and a trans employees. Any organiser I have told doesn't care. So there he is happily doing the circuits of events doing talks
Can you link the article please?
Shall we pop over to some events for the Q&A section?
The cancel culture paradox - how people who have been cancelled are given a variety of platforms to decry how they have been cancelled and are no longer given a platform.
Cancel culture mostly appears to be people with privilege using their access to platforms to moan about not having their voices heard.
In instances like this, it’s quite common for men to use the term “witch hunt” to describe the *audacity* of people trying to hold them accountable. To imply that women trying to see men held accountable for criminal activity is driven by vindictiveness and attention seeking tells you all you need to know about what that person thinks of women. It’s a medieval perspective. This is about safety, peeps. You all say “enough is enough” every time something really bad happens. How’s about we try and stop it happening.
