It takes a scorecard to keep track of the movers and shakers in the open RAN RIC (RAN Intelligent Controller) ecosystem, so here’s a cheat sheet from my latest report, ”Self-Organizing Networks and RAN Intelligent Control – 2024.” The research surveyed 16 vendors and included additional partners where mentioned. We noted that the number of operator engagements in the RIC ecosystem has doubled from last year, which is a prelude to commercial deployments. VMware remains the leading RIC platform vendor with the most 3rd party app vendors signed on board, but the Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform has made impressive gains since last year. AirHop retains its undisputed lead as the app vendor on the most RIC platform partners. We expect this ecosystem to exceed $1bn in revenue by 2028. Last week, AirHop Communications participated in the RIC Forum, organized by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). This was a unique event where NTIA invited applications from the Open RAN community to showcase AI/ML-based applications running on RAN Intelligence Controller (RIC). Of the 34 applicants, NTIA selected 10, and one of them was our partner Juniper Networks. Together with Juniper, Vodafone, Keysight Technologies and Rimedo Labs, we put together a one-of-a-kind demonstration of a true multivendor O-RAN ALLIANCE solution that integrated AirHop’s AI-powered Energy Savings rApp, trained with real-world dataset from Vodafone, interacting with Rimedo Lab’s Traffic Steering xApp, both running on Juniper’s RIC/SMO platform and Keysight’s RAN simulator - all with commercially available products and open interfaces. In this demonstration, we were able to show a reduction of about 25% in energy consumption using our rApp without compromising the end-user quality of experience (see charts).
