This news from MWC 2024 is not surprising. It's just an internal affair. As of March 31, 2022, NTT owned 22.81% of NEC's shares. So, it's not special that NTT and NEC have a long-standing business relationship in mobile technologies development including O-RAN. In terms of technology in the O-RAN field, NTT DoCoMo lags far behind Rakuten Symphony, a subsidiary of Rakuten. Rakuten Symphony has already succeeded in exporting O-RAN technologies to overseas MNOs and CSPs, but the NTT research team, which spends 100 million yen every day on R&D, has not produced any results. https://lnkd.in/g4qpjd87

I worked for a telco that almost religiously believed having The Best Network had enormous value, so much so that it drove a substantial part of the company's business plan & valuation. Not surprising as T-Mobile Netherlands (now Odido Nederland) had won the #Umlaut (now Accenture) Award every year from 2016 to 2021 and was even seen as the best network in the world a couple of times and combined, or coinciding, with an amazing and unique growth and value transformation path under the leadership of its CEO Sรธren Abildgaard and his Organization. Odido's operational performance did not break down when it lost the "Best" Network award to KPN in 2022 (as well as in 2023 & 2024). Odido kept growing on most (if not all) of its financial key indicators irrespective. I would argue that Odido's second-ranking in #Dutch mobile benchmarks is a very impressive achievement for Odido's technology team, as they have been busy replacing their mobile radio network for the last couple of years. Unsurprisingly, it also shifted its focus from having the "Best" Network to being the Dutch Customer Champion, which has always been part of its DNA (internally, at least) and part of the success story over the years. In general, there is a lack of hard evidence supporting the tangible benefits of having the "Best" network, as determined by Umlaut or Ookla benchmarking. In fact, being much better than your customers' expectations and demands may be seen as a waste of shareholders' money and value (i.e., cash wasteful). The below picture summarises the expectations for having the "Best" Network, the "verdict" on those, and 2023 data on the association of mobile network rank and the Count of Telcos with either positive or negative %-changes in mobile RGU and ARPU. No statistical evidence (between 2019 and 2023) is found that having the best network provides substantial operational benefits (apart from making your organization proud ... momentarily). Takeaways from deep diving into a lot of data the last couple of weeks: - There is a lack of statistical evidence to indicate we will have better or worse customer or ARPU growth figures with the network performance rank. In other words, having the "Best" Network does not automatically lead to positive Customer or ARPU growth figures. - The previous year's rank position is the best predictor for the current year's performance rank. - With a few exceptions, incumbent mobile operators are much more likely to take the number one position of the "Best" Network and keep it. - There is a very high correlation between #Ookla's performance rank and that of #Umlaut (not too surprising). The Ookla rank is a reliable predictor for the Umlaut rank, which is useful as Ookla is measured and publicized more frequently. - The total spectrum position is a strong predictor of the best cellular network and winning the "Best" Network award.
