We are deeply saddened by the passing of celebrated artist Bill Viola 💙. A true pioneer in the fields of new media, video, and installation art. Bill was instrumental in the establishment of video as a vital form of contemporary art. He created videotapes, architectural video installations, sound environments, electronic music performances, flat panel video pieces and works for television broadcast. Engaged in projects all over the world, Bill became one of the most acclaimed artists working with the moving image. His installations are admired for the lightness in which they address weighted themes such as birth and death. Bill had deep connections to Melbourne and local audiences had the unique opportunity to experience his work in October 2010, with two exhibitions: ‘The Raft’ at ACMI and ‘Fire Woman and Tristan’s Ascension’ at St Carthage’s Catholic Church in Parkville. We are thrilled to welcome three new ACMI Board members as we bid farewell to three long-serving members. Our big thanks go to technology expert Karen Corry, screen practitioner Rachel Griffiths AM and plastic surgeon (and contemporary art advocate) Dr Terry Wu for their contributions to the ACMI Board since 2015 and their commitment to completing maximum Board terms. They each brought unique skills and talents to ACMI and had a significant impact on the museum's strategic direction. This month we welcome three new Board members: Matthew Everitt, proud Taungurung man of the Kulin from Central Victoria and co-founder of Dreamtime Art Consultancy; Gabrielle L., creative entrepreneur and experiential design expert who co-founded the escape room, Trapt; and Chris Wright, co-founder and managing director of games companies Fellow Traveller Games, Double Jump Communications and The Treasure Hunters Fanclub. Matthew, Gabrielle and Chris join our current Board members - Janet Matton AM (Board President), Ian Forsyth, Alison Parker, Tea Uglow 🏳️⚧️ and Paul Wiegard - as they continue to guide ACMI on the journey to becoming a globally recognised hub for film, TV, videogames and screen-based art. We are excited to announce the winner of the 2023–24 ACMI + RMIT Games Prize is Althea Francisco for her work as Creative Director and Producer on the group project REAPRIEVE 👏👏 The selection panel found the game to have a polished and appealing art aesthetic, with unique characters, world and UX creating a strong visual identity for the game. The narrative was both witty and highly engaging. The panel found the structure of splitting playtime between exploration of the 3D overworld and the bureaucracy of the office environment to be a clever way of keeping things fresh for the player. Particularly of note were the inclusion of mini-games, which were well designed and enjoyable. Now in its fifth year, the ACMI + RMIT Games Prize is awarded to a graduating student from the RMIT Bachelor of Design (Games) for a work exploring the artistic potential of the medium.
