Time to clean up. National and international regulation should command that all new satellites and space assets have the ability to self-propel to a designated graveyard area at end of life or end of use. Through a international consortium, bounty should be placed on larger defunct space debris, and allow salvors to relocate to graveyard zone. Once relocation is proven bounty can be awarded to salvors. Potentially space junkyards could be set up in L4 and L5. These spent space assets can be recycled and reused for future in space construction. The option for forced entry burn up of space debris should be limited for safety and environmental protection.

Since first being proposed by Donald J. Kessler in 1978, NASA has tried to solve the issue of space debris crowding our orbital space. As literal rocket scientists look into methods like electromagnets, nets, and autonomous capture devices, regulators should do their part to assist in keeping our travel lanes clear. Last year I was published in the Loyola Maritime Law Journal about this topic. I detail the issue and propose several solutions drawing on the inspiration of maritime and aviation law. By using advancing active debris removal which involves developing technologies like robotic arms, nets, harpoons, and lasers to capture and deorbit debris. Focus on autonomous systems for precise targeting and efficient operations. Prioritize removing large, high-risk debris first. Enhance international collaboration to share technology and coordinate efforts. Secure funding and regulatory support to drive research and implementation.
