POSITION: Farm Manager

REPORTS TO: CTE Agri-Science Lead Teacher & High School Principal

STARTING DATE: As soon as possible.

Necessary Qualifications

  • High School Graduate (or equivalent).
  • Minimum five years experience in agriculture and livestock production.
  • Experience with Ag equipment, including maintenance and repair.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work well with students, staff, and community stakeholders.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience in working with high school students.
  • Post-secondary education in a related field.
  • Chauffer license for driving a bus (or willingness to get one).

SALARY: As per contract, based on qualifications and experience.

Division: Vocational Education

Job Title: Farm Manager

Classification: Auxiliary-Technical

Requirements

Qualification requirements that the Farm Manager must possess:

Education And/or Certification

  • High school graduate (minimum).
  • Post-secondary training in Production Agriculture is desirable.

2. Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of Production Agriculture.
  • In the supervision of students.

3. Other:

  • Work weekends, school breaks, and "on-call" for emergencies.

Essential Functions:

Mental Tasks

  • Ability to understand written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to demonstrate appropriate verbal/written communication in the supervision and teaching of students.
  • Ability to practice the principles of team play with other members of the Agriscience Department.
  • Ability to learn new technology essential to the Agriscience Department.
  • Ability to take direction from the Lead Instructor.
  • Assist Instructors with all aspects of classroom instruction as asked within the classroom, animal facility, greenhouse, shop, and other areas instruction will be provided to students.

2. Physical Tasks:

  • Ability to bend, stoop, squat, and kneel.
  • Ability to lift and move objects on the farm such as hay, straw, bags of farm food, etc.
  • Ability to climb stairs and in/out of farm vehicles.
  • Ability to assist students with agriculture-related skills.
  • Equipment:
  • Ability to utilize Agriculture related equipment such as tractors, wagons, greenhouse systems, Bobcat, pick-up, combine, planters, pumps, disks, chisel plows, and other farm-related equipment, etc.
  • Ability to utilize office and classroom equipment such as telephones, computers, printers, copiers, overhead projectors, and other basic classroom equipment.

Policy Requirements That The Farm Manager Must Follow

Adhere to applicable Master Agreement, district and/or building policies, staff handbook, including, but not limited to:

  • Attendance: Absences due to illness are to be reported ASAP to the building principal and Lead Instructor either the night before or early the morning off.
  • Business procedures.
  • Student discipline.
  • Safety (tornado, fire, lock-down, abuse/neglect procedures, and completion of Safe Schools Training.)
  • Personal appearance.
  • Emergency, accident, or illness.
  • Attend all required meetings and in-service programs on time; including advisory committee meetings or any meeting pertaining to the Agriscience Department.
  • Maintain/secure/inventory of equipment and materials according to an identified system.
  • Follow administrative directives, verbal and/or written.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • No extensions on allotted breaks or lunch times.
  • Remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the district.
  • Demonstrate acceptable ethical standards of the position.

Other

Manage The Farm Operation

  • The appearance of farm area buildings and equipment is based on "showplace," rather than home farm practices.
  • Organizations establish records and keep them regularly maintained on all maintenance and security of tools, equipment supplies, and buildings based on "show place", rather than home farm practices.
  • Coordinate crop activities fertilizer, plowing, discing, cultivating, harvesting, and storage as assigned.
  • Communicate the need for ordering supplies.
  • Assist with activities such as purchasing, breeding, feeding, health, and marketing as assigned.
  • Coordinate farm operations with a farm management lesson plan.
  • Supervise students when assigned for training purposes.
  • Assist SAE projects on the farm in conjunction with the CTE Instructors.
  • Supervise and help evaluate student intern's progress in the animal facility and greenhouse.
  • Assist with educational demonstrations to aid the CTE Instructors.
  • Enforce safety rules and regulations.
  • Attend consistent end-of-day meetings with CTE Instructors.
  • Assist with FFA activities, contests, shows, etc as needed.
  • Maintain and operate greenhouse irrigation in accordance with plant needs.
  • Weekend work as required, animal chores, greenhouse, etc.
  • Submission of timelines, work schedule, and plan for executing the management of the facility or other AG-related responsibilities to the school administrator and lead teacher.
  • Update of the above documentation as requested by school administration and lead teacher. Ensure that deadlines are met.
  • The Farm Manager is responsible to the Lead Teacher and his/her direction.
