The Capital Region MARCOM Awards is the biggest event of its type in the New York Capital Region and attracts a large number of entries every year, with 2021 marking its 6th year of operation. In 2020 we pivoted to an online event and ensured the continuity of the awards in the face of the pandemic, with a record number of entries and attendees for this livestreamed event. As the Chair of the Organizing Committee, it is my role to ensure that the event takes place on time and to budget, including oversight for sponsorships, awards, publicity, and event logistics. • Keep calm and carry on: New Yorkers' brand of Blitz Spirit will prove victorious

    The Times Union

Growing up in England in the 1970s, for many of the adults around me, World War II was a fresh memory. My father told me stories of hiding underneath the staircase of the house as the bombs rained down on the nearby city of Coventry, and seeing the red glow of the burning city beneath the blackout curtain. The next day he would scavenge for the spent cases of incendiary bombs to compete for the accolade of top collector with his buddies.

  • Going the Distance: How to Best Engage Students in an Online Environment

    Excelsior College

When colleges and universities started to offer classes online during the 1990s, it was hailed as the future of learning, as many institutions rushed to offer distance learning using the power of the Internet. In those pioneering days, however, educators tried to just replicate the physical classroom with which they were familiar. While it was a praiseworthy idea, this approach often missed the point in terms of the unique challenges and opportunities that the online environment presented.

    The Times Union

Unlike Sting's eponymous hero, this Englishman in New York decided to take a few ales in the local taproom in Newton Plaza on the occasion of Brexit Day evening of Friday, Jan. 31, rather than drink a cup of tea. This was the day that saw the United Kingdom leave the European Union after 47 years of membership.

  • Can we have good arguments on social media?

    TEDx

In a sketch from comedy legends, Monty Python, Michael Palin buys an argument, only to end up receiving personal abuse in one room and then being contradicted in another. Decades before the arrival of the Internet, their humor unwittingly foretold the typical experience of most people attempting to engage in an argument online: abuse or contradiction. We increasingly live our lives online and contentious topics from, gun ownership, vaccinations, abortions, Brexit, and immigration, are argued…

  • Business Basics: Developing a Business Strategy

    Excelsior College

The adoption of the word “strategy” by the business world owes a great deal to its original use by the military and some of the terminology reflects its roots. While people often talk of having, “a strategy to lose weight,” or, “a strategy to deal with a difficult co-worker,”’ in the business world we specifically mean a long-term plan that is focused on the overall mission of the organization and intended to achieve specific objectives.

  • Business Basics: What Is Servant Leadership?

    Excelsior College

Few would dispute that Gandhi was a good leader who inspired a loyal following through his own self-sacrifice and in the service of a cause. His type of leadership style, servant leadership, can be traced to the writings of a philosopher and poet of ancient China, Lao-Tzu, but an increasing number of modern leadership and management thinkers have also embraced the ideas of servant leadership.
