Free online and onsite seminar on Wed 13/03 at 17:30 Melissa Benn on "Inside the New Educational Establishment" Based on her recent introductory chapter in Teacher Education in Crisis: The State, the Market and the Universities in England (Bloomsbury Academic, 2023), Melissa Benn will use this seminar to look at some of the key players now running education - The New Educational Establishment - and examine some of their core ideas (and silences) around learning, curriculum, teaching and poverty. How much of a change does this Establishment and its values represent compared to those running education in the 60s and 70s? How much of a continuity is there between today’s influential players and the Thatcherite and New Labour period? As the Conservatives appear to implode, has that weakened the system and personnel that influential figures like Gove sought to build and enable? She will also look at how much this establishment might influence an incoming government, including a Labour one.

Institutions of all stripes “speak” in ways that influence the speech or thoughts of their members. Colleges are no exception. Universities “express their values” not just via formal statements from the office of the president, but in subtler ways—from the naming of buildings and placing of monuments to the awarding of honorary degrees and even the invitation of speakers. But does this institutional expression undermine free inquiry and viewpoint diversity? For a university to remain true to its truth-seeking mission, ought it pursue a policy of “institutional neutrality” instead? “A university, if it is to be true to its faith in intellectual inquiry, must embrace, be hospitable to, and encourage the widest diversity of views within its own community,” argued a 1967 report by the Kalven Committee for the University of Chicago. John Tomasi will invite you to consider how the ideal of neutrality might be appropriate to Catholic or faith-based colleges generally, and to Providence College in particular. https://lnkd.in/guNFKWQR

The primary goal of classical education is to teach students how to learn instead of what to learn. Learning at these schools is divided into the Trivium and the Quadrivium. Click here to get a brief introduction to each of these areas: https://lnkd.in/edvR2qsW

A new Goldwater report exposes the University of Arizona’s DEI lunacy where students are taught how to “live like a bug,” but nothing at all about the Constitution, the Civil War, or landmark Supreme Court cases… It’s getting out of hand and it’s time for state legislatures and public university boards to hold institutions of higher education accountable for fulfilling their core missions: the pursuit of truth and the rigorous education of citizens. https://ow.ly/kZO550S9P76

This is a sociopathic framing of the reality. Imagine the 1930s UK. Would supporters of Nazism feel comfortable supporting Nazism? No! So why should supporters of Zionism? Now, the crucial question then is… how do we know which Jews are Zionists and which aren’t. Well, we generally know, because origanisations like ‘Campaign Against Antisemitism’ keep telling us that 90% of Jews are Zionists. And so, unless a Jewish person is actively saying they are anti-Zionist. It is reasonable to deduce that they are a Zionist. Which means, they support the state of Israel as it carries out the genocide in Gaza, and illegally occupies Palestinians, as it has done for decades. Should these people feel comfortable? No. I believe not. They should be challenged and perturbed. - Silence is complicity #SpeakUp4Palestine - Views are my own, they do not represent the views of any of my past or present employers or clients, and a “like” is not necessarily an endorsement. FYI: Campaign Against Antisemitism
“The people in charge on our campuses aren’t trying to make sure that we’re safe.” Anatole, a Jewish student at @UniversityLeeds, does not feel safe right now. Unfortunately, there are many more who feel like he does. With little being done by the universities about the intimation on campus and antisemitic chanting by students and lecturers alike, can you blame them? As Anatole rightly says, this inaction by universities is a betrayal of their Jewish students.
