Ego.....not always a bad thing. Hear me out. Sales is hard. Logistics is hard. Sales in logistics can be really hard. We went from 2021 where one phone call could land you shipment after shipment to the last year where 100 phone calls could get you nothing! A successful Freight Agent needs to have a drive that keeps them going when freight is "easy" and when freight is "hard". I personally think that one of those factors is ego. 📣 Ego 📣 Confidence 📣 Over-Confidence 📣 Inflated Self-Worth These are all different words used to describe the same thing - A strong, almost arrogant, belief in one's own ability to be the best. I've been known to say a time or two that some of the most successful Freight Agents I know have a bit of ego going on. And that is what has kept them going to the top of their game. 💡 That total and utter belief that the "no" they heard on the phone doesn't define them. 💡 That a "yes" is just around the corner. 💡 That there is no way that they were not meant to be successful. You need that total belief in yourself to get through the 100 "no's" that you will hear today...knowing that it doesn't mean anything about you personally, and giving you the drive and confidence to make the next 10 calls. Where you can get into trouble is ego with no humility! That's a recipe for disaster....it can be a fine line. So, how about it? Do you have a little ego in your sales game?

Want to know how to keep a customer? Don't make them leave? I know...you would never MAKE your customer leave, right? Well, if you can't offer them all of the services they need to keep their supply chain moving, someone else can. You should be able to offer LTL, Dray, Expedited, International, and Intermodal options along with Truckload. Can you do that? If you are a freight Agent - look for a broker that is able to handle these things for you OR if you are a small broker and don't have access to these services for your customer - consider an agency agreement with a broker for the modes your brokerage can't serve right now. It's all about serving all of your customer's needs.

After my post yesterday I got a dm asking if it was normal for a sales rep to not be paid comission. smh. I constantly see what I would call “false advertising” in my feed “top pay, great earnings, etc”. Obviously I recruit freight agents, but I understand it’s not for everyone there are benefits to being w2 in a office, part of a team, etc. Here are 3 ctg based w2 companies that all pay 30-40 percent. For example, if you are doing 60k in gp you’d be making somewhere between 20-25k a month at all these companies. 1. MegaCorp Logistics- offices in nc, oh, fl, 2. Supply Chain Solutions Corp - offices in Chatoogna, and my home state of Minnesota. 3. Muse Freight - offices in Kansas City Mo. The sad reality for most good w2 reps I talk to is they are making 50 percent less than what they would make at these companies. I probably beat a dead horse with this topic, but the reality is a LOT of people don’t know what’s out there, in both the w2 and agent world and they are thinking their 7 percent is normal or all their company can “afford” in this market. If you can target cross country freight and long haul I’d do it. I kind of ran into it by accident, but as a ctg rep it made it easy to grow fast. Definitely got lucky too. In august of 2022 my 4th full month I hit 500k in revenue for a month (only 7 percent profit) but my load count wasn’t insane I had 1 customer that was shipping seafood north of seattle near canda that was usually multi pick multi drop going to the east coast. I had another customer who was importing product to California and needed 10-15 trucks a week to their Illinois location. I had another customer that was based in wyoming and everything coming out of Wyoming is normally going a decent distance. I took any freight I could get but I expressed to these customers as the relationship grew that long haul was my niche. I definitely got lucky, and that’s why I always say I doubt I’ll be able to repeat those numbers as fast but I think it is a good strategy to target long haul if you are a ctg rep. Be confident in your abilities and knowledge, but don't come across as arrogant. Remember, the interviewer is looking for someone who can work well with a team and represent the company professionally.   4. Show your passion: Sales is difficult and demanding. Several months ago I made a post encouraging people to get into logistics. Several people commented Matt why would you say that. You built your book in 22, 23 it’s different now. No one is on boarding. Lot of doom and gloom scrolling on here. So when I took this shipper role I was genuinely curious what the quality of the sales emails and calls would be. I didn’t get one good one. They all were either asking to get set up, if I had any loads, long 3 paragraphs about services and rates, ( someone even asked me what I do). We told most people that called we weren’t on boarding for 6-9 months. Would I have said the same thing if I got a good call or email? No, I was waiting for one. Never got one though so I just set up my friends. Even something simple like we ship for your competitor and run that product in xyz lane are you running out of this area too? Based on what I saw in 3 months, I am not sold on the doom and gloom. Very few other sales jobs you can get ahead simply by doing 5 minutes of homework and being unique. Dry Van Freight Market Update June 10-16: ~Top 5 spot market states (CA, TX, GA, IL, & NJ) account for 1/3 of the national spot volume and reported a $0.02/mile decrease on a 5% lower volume. ~Outbound spot linehaul rates in these states averaged $1.85/mile last week, $0.02/mile lower y/y on a 2% lower volume. ~In 2019 rates were $0.01/mile lower, averaging $1.78/mile and compared to the peak of the surge in linehaul rates at the end of 2021, dry van rates have dropped $1.27/mile or 41%. #freightmarket #supplychain #transportation #logistics #trucking
