As announced, the Drupal Association has updated The Drupal Certified Partner Program: “… to recognize and highlight those firms who represent the “small number of contributors” that “are critical to the health and future well-being” of Drupal … The current Marketplace lists 2,283 companies, many of whom provide Drupal services. Of these companies, 591 made a contribution to Drupal in 2023. Of these 591 contributors, the top 14% made 88% of total contributions in 2023. Some of these are relatively small organizations, who aren't necessarily getting the recognition they deserve. In fact, five of the top ten contributors in 2023 were companies with fewer than 50 employees…” 89 companies are now on the list of Drupal Certified Partners, compared to 2200+ previously. Our team has been actively contributing to drupal.org, and being on this list is an enormous recognition. One condition is having 150 annual Drupal.org credits (@DevBranch has 1300+ credits in the last year). But. Another drastic change in the Program turns things upside down: “An annual financial contribution will be required of all Drupal Certified Partners based on company size and measured by number of employees and full time contractors” Previously, you could pick the package based on its cost and benefits. Now, the annual amount for teams of 21-50 people is $8000, which will turn to $12000 if team growth continues. From the perspective of several agency owners (worldwide) I talked to and my own, an overall drastic rise in the required payments has a big impact. Some agencies calculate this change is not worth the proposed benefits. Not joining the enhanced Program is an option under their serious consideration. This applies to Ukrainian-based Drupal teams even more, as our expenses since 2022 have been multiplied by russia full-scale invasion. We invest a lot of income (and personal time) in our defense: volunteering and donations, helping those teammates who joined the Armed Forces, and moving from offices located too close to the front lines. Besides that, staying in Ukraine means fewer project possibilities as business partners and clients have to employ risk management strategies (totally understandable!). Here's a tutorial I just put together that walks through the latest version of our Fib Estimation / Poker Planning template. It's now using the voter widget I've shared videos of previously, along with automated update of the active ticket with the vote result, right into Jira!

How can you screw up with feature flags? Like most tools, feature flags can get messy and overcomplicated if they aren’t managed properly. e.g. - Naming feature flags inconsistently, or making the names incomprehensible - Not cleaning up old flags or considering their lifecycle (there are tools for this) - Creating feature flags that are obscure and have no descriptions, so it's not immediately obvious what they do - Providing business logic in a feature flag. Say, in complex rules that your code evaluates, state machines, references to other flags or other outside dependencies, or (erk) scripts, database queries or other code ^ This is a HUGE red flag that should prompt anyone to take a step back and rethink their life choices (Next post: how to use flags without running into things like the above)

When I see teams using standard folder structures in projects that currently only have one file in them, I'm reminded of people who buy shelves and then feel they need to buy knick-knacks to put on those shelves. As an exercise, try coming at it from the opposite end. Create source files in the root folder, and then ask "Where does this belong?" with each new source file, and put up your proverbial shelves when you've got stuff to put on them.
