Choosing *education* over *confusion* – a winning strategy for enterprise SaaS? What does the role of the first GTM hire look like these days? In 2018, when I joined Integromat as the first go-to-market hire, my primary responsibility was to build awareness about the product and acquire users organically (as a bootstrapped company with a product that had a steep learning curve, we stayed away from paid acquisition). I spent most of my time answering product questions in our user community, creating tutorials, sending newsletters, updating our support docs, and running co-marketing initiatives with our technology partners – essentially, a combination of product and marketing activities. This was before I became the Head of Growth and led the implementation of our data infra (which got me so deep in data that I haven't managed to come out of it). For companies without a dedicated Product or Marketing/Growth team, what are you looking for in your first GTM hire?

Here’s a hot take: First-party data is important. However, personalizing experiences based on a user’s past actions and transactions doesn’t always work. Why? Because people’s needs and preferences are changing at a rapid pace. What I liked yesterday I might despise today, and vice versa. Browsing a product or buying it once is a poor indication of me wanting more of that product. Clicking on a notification or opening an email doesn’t necessarily indicate interest – I might do it out of curiosity, boredom, or even by mistake. So what else is needed? Preference data or zero-party data, collected continuously from users to capture their changing preferences. In my latest guide – the final part of the 5-part series produced in collaboration with Piwik PRO – I cover some use cases depicting the benefits of complementing first-party data with zero-party data and the consequences of ignoring preference data (link in comments).
