When I took this CMO job at Consumer Reports (CR), a number of people reacted with surprise that I wasn’t going to another tech company after six years at Stack Overflow. The reality is every company is a tech company (or at least aspires to be), and the evolving tech at CR is one of the things that compelled me to join. As valuations surge the more a company mentions gen AI, more and more companies are creating products that will never achieve market fit — products that aren’t solving real problems. I’m bullish on the current startup ecosystem but for every diamond there are 20 duds. CR is not only working to inform people of what this frenetic moment in tech means for them (a surge in scams, increasing data breaches, etc.), we’re also harnessing gen AI to solve real problems for real people. What’s more annoying than the analysis paralysis that comes with a major (or minor) purchase decision? The $100m+ personal care brand Prose just announced their AI-powered Singluar.io "BeautyTech" platform as a standalone offering. This platform effectively makes them a DTC brand, a SaaS business, an R&D lab, a CRM, a contract manufacturer, and a fulfillment facility for personal care products all rolled up into one... what?! Is this a look around the corner at what a hyper-productive AI-enabled future looks like for DTC brands? Or just another business capitalizing on the investments its made in developing a competitive advantage and production efficiencies? Either way, it's unique and innovative. As we head into the Upfronts and Newfronts, brands need to know they can reach a massive audience, using video, that doesn't get skipped or ignored and is 4x more efficient on a cost per second viewed metric. Here’s a cool thing I’ve noticed: Nearly all our customers who come to us come because they want to #MakeBuyingSimple. They realize there’s something more fundamental that needs to change in today’s B2B buying experience. And it’s not something as trivial as lead gen or demand gen or growth hacks or some conversion tactic. At the end of the day, it’s people, not companies who are coming to buy your software and product.

So, what next? Seems to me two likely paths. 1) The cookie continues to erode and degrade until the Sandbox version 4932 is rolled out and takes a significantly different approach. Or 2) The regulators focus on other areas of change. The plug gets pulled without the Sandbox, and everyone sitting around waiting wakes up one morning and either has a robust alternative in place or deferred deferred deferred and puts their business at significant risk. The new US data protection and related regulations also strike me as an added level which will add more and more pressure on any potential Sandbox solution.

Google did it again. The deprecation of third-party cookies is delayed once more, this time until 2025 (“early next year”). Initially, Google planned to phase out third-party cookies from the Chrome browser by 2022. Though the timeline has been pushed back several times, many anticipated the end of cookies by late 2024, as Google had already begun disabling cookies for 1% of its users. However, yet another delay was announced just yesterday. Since the original announcement in 2020, not a week goes by without major digital marketing publications discussing this topic. In theory, the AdTech industry is prepared for this shift to a new era, with solutions ready to deploy. Yet, I believe these new approaches will only face the real test once Google fully pulls the plug on cookies.
