We all have a lot of different needs when it comes to our vehicles. For some, it’s the daily commute, for others, it's long journeys on the open road. At this point, there’s less concern about whether electric vehicles can do the day-to-day drives as charging technology and infrastructure are improving. What about those long-distance trips? I was so excited when I came across this EV road trip planner from The Chronicle. It helps drivers compare trips for popular electric models, but the same idea can be applied to any EV you want. Keep in mind consumption and charging curves when ensuring you arrive at your destination with some battery left. Range worries can be a thing of the past, it’s possible to have hassle-free road trips in your new electric ride! Today, we published our annual ESG Report. Flip to page 25 to read all about the Prologis Mobility team’s progress in 2023, including 2 million miles of EV truck travel and charging 1/5 of all Class 8 EV trucks in California. I am so happy and fortunate to work at a company where sustainability is in our core DNA.   I’m especially excited to highlight our 2030 goal: achieving 900 MW of EV charging capacity across a portfolio of hubs, depots and workplace charging locations. Contextually, that big Denker project I shared last week had 9MW of EV charging capacity. There are projections showcasing that there will be up to 1 million electric commercial vehicles by 2030 in America. Commercial fleets are the lifeblood of the U.S. supply chain. If that many vehicles are going electric, we need to move FAST to get the infrastructure in place to support them. I hear a lot about the fear of transitioning a fleet and having nowhere to charge it. That’s a valid fear – we cannot disrupt access to food, medical supplies and critical goods. When I hear that fear, I try to share the vast quantity of solutions in place for EV charging infrastructure. Yes, some of them take years to make possible, BUT there are also OnDemand options to bridge the gap. News broke this morning about Tesla laying off their entire Supercharger team. With #EV drivers (Tesla and non-Tesla alike) viewing Superchargers as the fastest, most convenient, and most reliable network, what does this mean for EV adoption? Short-term: 1. I'm guessing there's some serious buyers' remorse (and frantic checking of contract terms) happening at major OEMs who threw in with Tesla/Supercharging as part of the NACS transition this morning. 2. I suspect this will delay Supercharger access for non-Tesla drivers that don't currently have it (right now, it's just Ford Motor Company and Rivian drivers who do). 3. This is also a negative for any prospective Tesla buyers, and will likely lead to further sales declines for the brand (Q1 was...not good for Tesla). Escalent's EVForward study has found that awareness of charging infrastructure is a powerful driver of EV intent, and that as awareness has increased, buyers' range expectations have decreased to be more in line with what EVs can actually do (not to mention driver behavior). Consequently, we'll likely see the following longer-term: 1. Slightly slower EV adoption than we would otherwise due to at least a pause (if not outright halt) of Supercharger site development. 2. Greater pressure on non-Tesla networks. It's now more important than ever that Electrify America fixes its reliability issues and IONNA creates a robust & reliable network. And we need states to accelerate NEVI deployment to get those chargers in the ground. Bottom line, Elon Musk getting bored with the car business and making knee-jerk decisions like this is detrimental to the entire e-mobility transition and it's now time for the grown-ups in the industry to step up and deliver.
