Participated in this 8-month experience as a "responsible adult" helping to guide 40 ninth-graders in a holistic learning process about Navajo and Hopi cultures in Arizona and New Mexico. Monthly classes and retreats led to a 10-day road trip to their sacred lands. The goal of this "coming-of-age" experience was to help the youth discover something new about themselves and their perspectives on the world by befriending other youth in a culture very different from their own.

The campaign is the result of a unique partnership between Cactus, a Denver-based advertising agency, the Office of Suicide Prevention at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the Carson J Spencer Foundation, a Colorado suicide prevention nonprofit organization. The purpose of the Man Therapy campaign is to provide men approaching crisis, and their loved ones, a place to go and learn more about men’s mental health, examine their own and consider a wide array of actions that will put them on the path to treatment and recovery. The message is that all men should be aware of their mental health, treat it like they would a broken leg and strive to get better.

We inspire youth entrepreneurs to use innovation and business skills to solve a root cause of suicide in their community. The FIRE Within is a year-long, hands-on, classroom-based project implemented in partnership with Junior Achievement and the Second Wind Fund. Through innovation and entrepreneurship, the FIRE Within inspires and coaches students in Colorado high schools to find market based solutions to mental health issues. After a dose of entrepreneurial skill set development, leadership strength assessment, and a root cause analysis of the drivers of suicidal distress in their community, these emerging entrepreneurs are challenged to develop, market, and ultimately sell a product of their own making. The students’ products work to fundamentally solve a root cause of suicide in their community by challenging discrimination, confronting stigma, eradicating bullying, promoting resilience, and sustaining a passion for life. Through an intense business plan competition students vie for micro-grants to seed fund their innovative business endeavors ($100-$500) and then implement their ideas – creating their products, marketing their business, managing their finances and measuring their impact.
