"Crazy Anti-Homeless Architecture" epitomizes a troubling intersection of urban design and social exclusion. These hostile structures, ranging from spiked benches to sloped surfaces, prioritize aesthetics over empathy, effectively criminalizing poverty. Rather than addressing the root causes of homelessness, they exacerbate the issue, creating physical barriers to public spaces. Such designs reflect a societal failure to provide adequate support and compassion for vulnerable populations. Instead, they symbolize a misguided attempt to hide the problem rather than solve it, perpetuating stigma and inequality. 🌟 Shaping the Future of Architecture and Health 🏥 Since Texas A&M University pioneered the Architecture for Health program in 1966, soon thereafter Clemson, universities nationwide have integrated health considerations into design education. As we navigate the post-pandemic era, it's crucial to reassess these programs to ensure designers are equipped with essential health knowledge. Moving forward, we must prioritize integrating principles, processes, and tools for designing health-enhancing environments. This approach empowers architects with advanced skills to meet evolving industry needs and societal health demands. Initiatives like these aim to redefine educational programs, identifying strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for integrating health into design and research. Early #Modernism is filled with radical ideas about architecture, living, and industrial materials--often these are combined in a way that anticipates our contemporary focus on embedding #sustainable principles in architecture. Architect Albert Frey's design, working for A. Lawrence Kocher, of the 1931 #AluminaireHouse is such an anticipatory project. I wrote a review of the house and accompanying retrospective of Frey at the #PalmSpringsArtMuseum for #ArchitecturalRecord's May print issue (and it's online now, linked below). Although Frey did not design it according to #circulareconomy thinking, it effectively is a circular house--the original materials and systems have been taken apart and reconstructed at least four times. When someone says you cannot do something--like design a house using #circularity--tell them someone did it in 1931, so what's the big deal? #NotSoMuch

Blain, Matthew, and Stephen D. Wong. 2024. “Integration of Resilient and Complete Streets in Geometric and Roadway Design Guides.” Findings, April. This research explores the state of resilience and Complete Streets topics in current geometric and roadway design guides in North America. We conducted a content analysis of twenty-two provincial, state, and general design guides, and a topical examination of the relationship of Complete Streets elements to resilience goals. While Complete Streets topics are well integrated into guides, resilience topics are rarely present, leading to possible missed opportunities to achieve co-benefits or manage tensions. Implications from this research can begin discussions that embed safety and resilience into roadway design that also furthers multi-modal and sustainable transportation. https://lnkd.in/gV7qvZte.

Twenty-two Indian cities house more than 16,500 people per kilometer–among the most densely populated cities in the world. With more than half of India’s population projected to live in urban areas by 2050, urban environments in India will only be getting denser. In such a context, building educational institutions away from the cities would deprive the vast majority of the population of accessing quality education. Moving schools and other educational institutes away from the cities is not an option–we need to look at ways of designing them within our cities, tackling the challenges of urban density creatively.
