According to the latest edition of The CMO Survey, nearly 25% of CMOs said their organization didn't use martech solutions. That's clearly rubbish. But more concerning is that their current martech investments are struggling to meet ROI expectations, when they're used at all. But that's not going to stop CMOs from spending more on martech... they told us so. Marketers are meant to master communications. Yet, we often struggle to help non-marketers understand our world. When CMOs constantly use marketing jargon, it's difficult for other execs to even understand what they're talking about. It's a language barrier. And it's surprising how often it happens in the boardroom. Here are a few suggestions I shared in a recent article with The Drum: - Find a “bilingual” CMO who is fully proficient in both the language of marketing and the language of the boardroom - Place more marketing experts to serve directly on boards, or to advise board members and help "translate" marketing topics - Learn to speak each other’s languages... but know that this takes time, trust, and commitment. #marketing #CMO #CEO #CFO https://lnkd.in/eNcbw_bx

Almost a quarter of marketers rate their personalization success as “best in class” while 71% say their personalization is “somewhat successful in assisting them to achieve marketing objectives,” according to a new Ascend2 study focused on AI’s current and future influence on marketing personalization. “In a landscape where personalization reigns as a crucial tool for marketing success,” the study says, “these findings challenge us to delve deeper into the strategies and tactics working in marketing personalization so that all marketing professionals find ways to advance their personalization program to new heights in 2024.” Titled “The Use of AI To Advance Personalization in 2024,” the study surveyed 355 marketing professionals in mid-March, finding that most believe AI could further improve predictive analytics of customer behavior (55%) and enhance dynamic content creation and optimization (54%). Nearly half (49%) believe it could enable real-time adjustments based on customer interactions. “Marketers are excited about AI's ability to help them expand and scale the complexity of future personalization programs,” the study says, with 69% anticipating a significant or moderate impact from AI on their personalization performance. Of the anticipated challenges, 48% said the lack of skilled personnel capable of implementing AI solutions was the largest limitation in leveraging its capabilities. Everyone keeps wondering why the average CMO tenure keeps getting shorter. I believe, at the heart of it, there's a communication gap. Marketing has become more complex. But a big part of our job is to provide clarity. When marketers start using jargon and acronyms, it can sound to board members and other C-level execs like they are speaking a foreign language. Likewise, marketing leaders often fail to link their work back to core financial metrics, or to go the extra mile to explain clearly how their efforts (and budget) impact revenue. Fortunately, there's a lot we can do to remedy this.
