A lesson about marketing I wish I knew earlier in my career. “The CEO is the CMO.” I heard this on the Exit Five podcast and it rings true to my career. The CEO decides the team’s resources, direction, and budget. But I still didn't get it. In my past I pushed the marketing plan and was resistant (ahem defensive) about alterations and suggestions. I never got close enough to the leadership team to constructively collaborate with them on the plan. So the next important question is what kind of marketer is your CEO? And what do they believe in? • Sales at all costs • Tools and automation • Storyteller and branding Understanding their style and vision for marketing is the first step to understanding how you should execute for plan. I wish someone told me this sooner. Marketers, cozy up to your CEO and work together to create a marketing strategy for the org.
