Note to men: Mentor her! (Yes, even during a pandemic)
Chief Learning Officer
Social distancing during COVID-19 is uncomfortable and challenging, but it also creates unique opportunities for men mentoring women to continue to be reliable and caring colleagues. Men who are uncomfortable with cross-gender relationships at work might easily put aside and deprioritize their mentorships with women during the shutdown. But here’s the thing: Outstanding mentors show up and engage with mentees in crises and uncertain times, even when this requires some creativity and adaptation.

How perceptions of a successful physician-scientist varies with gender and academic rank: toward defining physician-scientist's success
BMC Medical Education

Physician-scientists (the physician-scientist workforce) are aging, and there are too few physician-scientists in the pipeline to replace those who retire. Moreover, the pipeline is leaky because some trainees and junior physician-scientists choose other career paths. Significant attention has been directed toward patching the leaking pipeline, thereby increasing the quantity of physician-scientists. Less attention has been devoted to identifying and training more successful physician-scientists, thereby increasing the quality of the pool and making up for the attrition. Though all training programs strive to develop more successful graduates, there is no clear understanding of what constitutes predictors of future success. Identifying characteristics of success would enable those who recruit trainees—and later hire and fund physician-scientists—to make more informed decisions. It also could impact on the training, as it would be possible to focus on competencies that foster success. Predictors of success are therefore important. Prior to taking on this task, however, we must first define success for physician-scientists.

Gateways to the Laboratory: How an MD-PhD Program Increased the Number of Minority Physician-Scientists.
Academic Medicine
Traditional underrepresented minority (URM) groups (African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans) remain underrepresented among physician-scientists. To address the dearth of URM physician-scientists, in 1993 the Weill Cornell/Rockefeller/Sloan Kettering Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program developed a pipeline program, Gateways to the Laboratory (Gateways), which focuses on increasing the breadth and depth of the URM physician-scientist pipeline by offering an all-encompassing summer…

To address the dearth of URM physician-scientists, in 1993 the Weill Cornell/Rockefeller/Sloan Kettering Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program developed a pipeline program, Gateways to the Laboratory (Gateways), which focuses on increasing the breadth and depth of the URM physician-scientist pipeline by offering an all-encompassing summer research training program which mirrors the life of a physician-scientist. This includes hypothesis-driven research and clinical shadowing opportunities, coupled with weekly career development workshops and extensive multitiered mentoring. Among the 245 alumni who had "graduated" from Gateways as of 2013, 88% have pursued or completed advanced degrees. Among these, 74% completed or are pursuing MD, PhD, or MD-PhD degrees; and 17% completed or are pursuing combined MD-PhD degrees, over one-third of whom are enrolled in the Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program. Gateways outcomes are compared to other programs with similar missions, which shows that Gateways has been successful at preparing URMs for MD-PhD Programs. The program serves as a model for how to increase the national pool of competitive URM MD-PhD applicants.

Our enduring belief is that great ideas are not bound by race, gender, sexuality, location, age or wealth. Indeed, often they defy limiting perspectives and prejudices.
And so, the Thinkers50 Radar for 2021 features the Moroccan-born dean of a South Korean business school, Danish campaigners for diversity, a Russian expert on digital trends in China, two Trinidadian thinkers championing “cooperative advantage”, an inspiring Ghanaian entrepreneur and much more.
They don’t have all the answers but their work and ideas present us with many of the key questions which we need to resolve as individuals and organizations in the years ahead.
