How can you evaluate R&D projects that involve platform innovation?
A key part of defining a platform vision is understanding what a platform can do. Well designed platforms can do a lot but not everything. For example, platforms do better when there is high network density and the potential for many and frequent interactions between buyers and sellers. Another consideration is platform depth. Is the aim to provide efficient transactions or build a rich service stack that delivers more value and therefore the potential for stronger network effects? The potential and degree of density and depth are important in defining your platform vision.

What are the key drivers and barriers for adopting circular economy principles?
Adopting circular economy principles is one thing, taking action is another. Some companies will attempt to go circular alone in which they try to take back, reuse and/or recycle their own products. This is challenging. Others will see strategic advantage in going circular together with other companies. This can be accomplished in serval ways. The most ambitious is to establish a circular marketplace and become a platform operator. A good example is International Holding Company which recently established the Rebound Plastics Exchange. Another is to participate in existing circular marketplaces. For example, Google is an active participant in Rheaply's free-to-join its reuse marketplaces in major cities in the US.

In this Forbes article, I examine the key role that circular platforms can play in improving sustainability and de-risk supply chains. Most discussions of the circular economy focus on the actions specific brands can/ must play. However, as I argue in this article, it is often much more efficient and effective to go circular together via digital marketplaces.

The interviews involved a 45-minute to one-hour discussion based on a 45 question guide.
