Senior Vice President, Director of Studies, and Maurice R. Greenberg Chair at the Council on Foreign Relations
🎧 This week, Matthias Matthijs and Daniela Schwarzer joined me to discuss the recent British and French elections. Here are my three takeaways from our conversation: Center-left parties won big. The Labour Party holds nearly two-thirds of the seats in Britain’s House of Commons. The New Popular Front controls the most seats in the French National Assembly. Now they have to govern. Far-right parties surged, even though they remain out of power. The UK’s anti-immigrant Reform Party won 14 percent of the vote. The National Rally added sixty seats in the French National Assembly. The right is advancing, not retreating. The gap between votes cast and seats won was vast. The Conservatives and Reform Party combined to outpoll the Labour Party but won many fewer seats. (Put differently, Labor increased its vote share by just 1.7 percentage points compared to the 2019 election and more than doubled its seats in the House of Commons.) The National Rally won 40 percent more votes than the New Popular Front in the second round of voting but controls only the third-most seats in the National Assembly. Election rules and strategic voting matter. https://lnkd.in/eD34NMXv
