We do cloud to increase efficiency and to increase speed of execution to become more responsive, agile and competitive in the marketplace. But here is the problem - have we seen that? The 2023 spend on internal telco cloud in 2024 is estimated to be 24 BUSD, going up to $139 BUSD in 2032. That means we are already 24 BUSD in the hole before we can even break even. So are we seeing those returns? I believe we are in some places, but not in others. I believe BT Group took a lead on understanding how to do cloud first hand, and not outsourcing the problem to vendors. Cloud is something you do, not something you buy. You get the 29 BUSD++ return through transforming operations from manual, error prone, and slow, to automated, work once work always, and fast. You get it back through using cloud not buying cloud. To be successful in cloud you have to first focus on what you are going to stop doing because of it's presence... Heading to D.C. for the Federal Communications Commission Technology Advisory Council quarterly meeting tomorrow 6/21. We are midway through the year and will provide an update alongside Brian Daly on #6G developments as part of our charter. We have explored the recently concluded first 6G workshop in 3GPP, interacted with IEEE 802.11 working group(s) to expand the horizon beyond cellular to unlicensed and #WiFi and looked at the state of the art and requirements for 6G of #URLLC applications in the automotive sector. The breath of technologies being investigated ( #ISAC, #RIS, #metasurface, #nativeAI, #quantum, #security ) will need motivating use cases and spectrum needs will tie it together. I've been following major developments that could impact many of us in the tech industry, particularly those working in rural telecoms and global connectivity. Recently, the FCC denied SpaceX's request to use specific spectrum bands for expanding Starlink's mobile service. This decision is a considerable obstacle for SpaceX, which planned to use its 7,500 second-generation satellites to offer mobile connectivity alongside its existing broadband services. The issue here is that SpaceX's application didn't align with existing regulations that restrict the use of the 1.6 GHz, 2 GHz, and 2.4 GHz bands for additional mobile-satellite service (MSS) applications. It's a classic scenario of balancing innovation with regulation, and this time, regulation holds sway.
