KeyState Energy, CNX Resources, and Pittsburgh International Airport are joining forces to create a cutting-edge facility for producing hydrogen and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT). Perry Babb, CEO of KeyState Energy, highlighted the project's potential, stating, "The innovations contemplated for the PIT hydrogen and SAF Hub have the potential to produce the lowest-carbon, lowest-cost, large-scale aviation fuel in the world." The planned facility will have the versatility to produce either hydrogen (up to 68,000 metric tons annually) or SAF (up to 70 million gallons per year), or both simultaneously in adjusted volumes. This $1.5 billion project depends on the U.S. Department of the Treasury providing a pathway for ultra-low carbon intensity fugitive coal mine methane under the 45V Hydrogen Production Tax Credit. Once operational, this facility could generate enough SAF to replace nearly all traditional jet fuel usage at PIT, offering it at a competitive price. Christina Cassotis, CEO of Pittsburgh International Airport, emphasized, “Increasing SAF and hydrogen production in the U.S. is a necessary first step in reducing carbon output to meet upcoming industry goals, helping aviation earn its right to grow and moving further toward a cleaner, greener future. We look forward to continuing to work with our partners, CNX and KeyState Energy, in cementing Pittsburgh International Airport and our region as a global leader in sustainable energy.” The collaboration is also seeking a federal grant to conduct a logistics study to find the most cost-effective way to transport SAF produced at PIT to other airports in the Northeast and Midwest. This could involve pipelines, barges, or rail. A 2021 study by the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) confirmed the technical feasibility of constructing and operating a gas-to-liquids SAF facility at PIT, utilizing onsite natural gas production and net-zero or net-negative greenhouse gas emissions feedstocks to produce SAF. Today, two members of the Waste Gas Capture Initiative (WGCI), KeyState Energy and CNX Resources Corp., announced a collaboration with Pittsburgh International Airport to bring a 70-million-gallon hydrogen/ sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) facility to the airport's property. The hydrogen/SAF project aims to utilize the 45V hydrogen production credits from the Inflation Reduction Act and waste coal mine methane (CMM) emissions as feedstock to create low carbon intensity alternative fuel, pending forthcoming U.S. Department of Treasury implementation rules. "This is an exciting development at a pivotal time for the clean hydrogen economy. Hydrogen produced from captured coal mine methane is one of the most effective methods to reduce emissions in hard-to-abate sectors, including aviation," said WGCI Executive Director Michael Moore. "This project shows in clear terms what can be possible in the effort to reduce emissions through smart, innovative, and effective policy, enabling industries and consumers to protect the environment while supporting thousands of good-paying jobs." HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY! I received an inquiry yesterday asking if other Utilities were interested in TENs (Thermal Energy Networks) other than NY & MA. The question was as if this was a new concept not just a new acronym and it struck me that our 40-year old industry does everything we can to confuse the end user. We change vernacular whenever we can. Are they Geothermal Heat pumps or ground source heat pumps or GeoExchange. Is it a district energy system or a thermal energy network etc etc. The answer is YES (see how confusing this is) but let me clarify. The term that our industry is now using is “ground source” heat pumps, yes they are geothermal but “ground source” as opposed to “air source” defines the technology better for the end user. GeoExchange is another name that once was used because the term “heat pump” was considered a bad thing, it is now the legislative organization of our industry. In this same vain, the term ‘Thermal Energy Network” (TEN) is a term that defines using the thermal energy in the earth, water or other sources to deliver that useful energy to a facility. This is not a new concept, just new terminology. Our members have been designing & installing these systems for decades the EPIC project, which will be featured in the next GeoOutlook is a prime example of this. Other examples are Serenbe in Atlanta, Nashville Airport, using “slim jim” technology or even the Sharc Systems using the energy from effluent, they are all using thermal energy from either the earth, water or effluent to deliver space conditioning or water heating to a facility. These projects all have one thing in common, they use systems that are sustainable not only energy wise but also financially, they “penciled” out and they work. I am not saying that there are not new and exciting ways to take advantage of the “energy under our feet”, what I am pointing out is adding another acronym may be a great marketing tool but it tends to lead people to believe that this is a new concept when in fact it is just another term. 🔋 Exciting news for Rhode Island's clean energy future! On June 26, Governor Daniel McKee signed the 2024 Energy Storage Systems Act into law, marking a pivotal step towards a 100% clean energy goal. Championed by State Senator Dawn Euer, Esq. and State Representative Arthur Handy, this Act aims to revolutionize the state's energy landscape. "Energy storage is flexible, reliable, and affordable—a game changer for Rhode Island’s power grid," said Kat Burnham, Rhode Island State Lead at Advanced Energy United. Key features of the Act include: - Storge Targets: 90 MW by 2026, 195 MW by 2028, and 600 MW by 2033. - Infrastructure Programs: Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank will promote energy storage adoption. - Storage Procurements: The Rhode Island Public Utility Commission can mandate cost-effective storage system procurements. PG&E is one of the first energy companies in North America to deploy standalone power systems as an alternative customer service offering to electricity provided through traditional grid infrastructure. Throughout PG&E’s 70,000-square-mile Northern and Central California service area, pockets of remote customers are served via long electric distribution lines that in many cases traverse high-fire-risk areas. Replacing these overhead powerlines with a reliable and low-carbon local energy source is an innovative option that, in many cases, is preferred for serving customers at the edges of the grid. Remote grids operate independently from the larger electric grid that delivers energy throughout the state, and they allow PG&E to remove overhead powerlines, significantly reducing wildfire risk and service interruptions.
