“Jeanette was a trusted resource for development professionals and teams at SmithBucklin and I was lucky to work with her. While I managed the operations side of our fundraising efforts, Jeanette worked to establish strong relationships, primarily with pharmaceutical and scientific companies, to secure grants and sponsor ships that would support the work of the organization. Her diligence, knowledge and enthusiasm helped our team to achieve our goals. I recommend Jeanette without hesitation and would be fortunate to work with her again in my career. ”

How can you reduce dependence on major donors?
The most sophisticated development programs generate support not only from individuals but corporations, foundations, and in some cases, government sources. Giving USA data consistently demonstrates that the vast majority of philanthropy comes from individuals, and ongoing cultivation of those donors is essential, but there is great risk in dependence on the same major donors. A relationship can tainted by asks that are too soon, too frequent, or not aligned with donor interests. Many major donors are Board members, and they will ask valid questions about the effectiveness of the development program, and what steps are being taken to ensure the growth of a robust, diversified program that doesn’t depend on the same donors.
