This week Alan Amici discusses tariffs on Chinese EVs and the EV demand decrease. "The tariff is relatively benign when compared to the 100% duty imposed by the U.S. Still, it sends a message that “unfair subsidization” of Chinese imports will not be tolerated. Canada is considering similar measures to protect its robust automaking industry. The industry needs a level playing field and an appropriate capacity to meet demand. Excess capacity, dumping, and subsidized products create labor, supply, profitability, and sustainability issues in the long term, which is not a good outlook for the auto industry. The recent adoption of a North American standard for a universal EV charging interface is big news for both EV EV drivers and EV manufacturers. Although there are a few "speed bumps" that will delay full deployment for a year or so, it will effectively double the number of EV charging stations available to the public by allowing non-Tesla vehicles to access Tesla's17,000+facilities, as well as enable Tesla vehicles to charge at any SAE J3400-compliant commercial charging station. Great perspective on what is really happening in the EV market from Laurence Iliff of Automotive News. One takeaway: Auto sales act like other free markets and prices rise and fall with demand for EVs two. Incentives near $9k or more lower the price to attract buyers. OEMs at some point need to have vehicles that sell without such huge discounts.

The Biden administration said Thursda t plans to award General Motors and Chrysler-parent Stellantis nearly $1.1 billion in grants to convert existing plants to build electric vehicles and components The Department of Energy (DOE) announced $1.7 billion in planned grants to help fund the conversion of 11 "at risk" plants in eight states to enable the production of 1 million EVs annually, help retain 15,000 existing jobs, and create 3,000 new positions.  The White House is courting union workers in key battleground states and seeking to reassure autoworkers that EVs will not cost jobs by subsidizing automakers and suppliers efforts to shift to EVs.
