We are headed for a major problem in the energy sector very soon if we don't start prioritizing modernization of the grid. Renewables still have a long way to go and if they can't get all that power creation onto the grid it can't supply all of our increasing energy needs. Until the grid can be up to speed, fossil fuels are going to have to be around for longer, probably much longer, because progress on the grid is not keeping up. Now we have EV's, crypto mining, and AI power needs to supply and hot summer weather is on the way.

The fourth issue of Energy Insider hit inboxes Sunday. This one relates the solar industry, which is benefitting from consumer and corporate tax breaks in the Inflation Reduction Act. Solar demand is getting a lift from a drop in panel prices, while domestic panel production and installations are expanding. Solar has become the top source of energy for new power generation by utilities. There’s even an AI angle, thanks to growing power demand from data centers. But the solar boom is being complicated by new rounds of tariffs on imports from Southeast Asia. The attempt here is serious and important. The energy impact that lies ahead plays a major role in the course of history, and as innovators and as a community of engineers, we must work to begin to change, and it is vital that we implement the first step towards renewable #energy. #earthday We, as editors, have the task of amplifying the importance of this moment. DOE proposes ten “national interest” transmission corridors (my latest for PV Magazine USA) Eight of the ten transmission corridors proposed by the U.S. Department of Energy would facilitate transmission between grid regions; one would expand transmission within the Mid-Atlantic’s #PJM grid region; and one would expand transmission in the Northern Plains.

The Department of Energy (DoE) periodically raises the bar for energy efficiency in "general service" lamps. The current bar is set to 45 lumens per watt (lpw). They have announced that the new minimum standard for these lamps will be at least 120 lpw beginning in just four years. That's going to be a major challenge for lamp manufacturers to meet. Although LED technology continues to make large strides in efficiency and quality, there are currently no lamps that can meet the new standard. My fear is that manufacturers might have to trade off color quality to meet these new standards, but we'll just have to wait and see if they can meet the challenge. It won't be easy to accomplish, but if they can do so, it will save millions of tons of carbon, unwanted BTUs of heat, and a lot of electricity. If you want VPP - ‘virtual power plants,’ first define them ... Clarity around terminology and end goals can break through years of policy inertia. After a period of relatively slow growth, virtual power plants are having a moment. A recent Brattle Group study finds VPPs could save California consumers over a half-billion dollars per year. PJM mostly finalized its VPP rules in late 2023, shortly after the Department of Energy’s “Pathways to Commercial Liftoff” report offered a U.S. roadmap for VPP deployment. Every other week, it seems, there’s news about a successful VPP pilot or financing for a new large VPP project. The discourse around VPPs is broken Virtual power plants are aggregations of distributed energy resources that can function as a single resource to provide certain services associated with traditional power plants. And while it’s a virtue that VPPs can include diverse resources and offer a variety of services, their complexity has often hindered policymaking efforts. Level 1 VPP: Utility program where individual DERs respond to utility signals to provide grid services. (Examples: Massachusetts’ Connected Solutions program and California’s Demand Side Grid Support program.) Level 2 VPP: DERs are aggregated into a “fleet” that responds as one resource to a utility’s call for grid services. (Example: SunRun VPPs in contracts with PG&E and California Community Choice Aggregators.) Level 3 VPP: DERs are aggregated into a “fleet” that operates as one resource in a wholesale market while staying coordinated with the local distribution utility. The fleet and individual DERs may also provide retail market services. (Example: FERC Order 2222 aggregations, when they appear.) Again, the purpose of defining terms like “virtual power plant” — or “energy storage,” “resilience,” etc. — isn’t to uncover some sort of existential truth about these resources. Nor is it to constrain anyone’s marketing efforts — go ahead and call your VPP offering whatever you want.
