We were on a really fast growth trend, so they hired to be able to deliver, and now things are stabilizing,” said Stacy Schmitt, the senior vice president of communications for Opportunity Austin. State economics analyst Mark Sprague echoed the sentiment saying “what goes up must come down,” and attributing the recent wave of layoffs to a broader trend in the tech industry nationally. “It's misleading to say we are the next Silicon Valley or the next big startup hub. We're not good at everything, no one can be," CEO of startup incubator MediaTech Ventures said. "'Tech’ is too generic a word. It includes everything from software and fintech to semiconductors. A lot of people that came here thinking Austin was great for ‘tech’ are now considering, ‘is my business actually appropriate in Austin?’” Yep. I said it. Why? Because a city doesn't excel by being the same as everywhere else. The *reason* so many remain bullish on #Austin is that Austin is maturing to recognize strengths and weaknesses. As part of my business education, I had the pleasure of taking a job a few years back that involved being employee number ~1 leading the digital transformation of a legacy retail fixtures business. This meant taking my SaaS & data product management experience and building a parts database, a screen analytics competency, and doing a full-blown cyber security benchmarking exercise within our portfolio of fellow Berkshire Hathaway companies and then once we decided to build vs. buy to develop our eCommerce platform business, leading the data safeguarding and cyber security upgrade required by our automotive OEM client. Boy was that eye-opening. From insurance, to payments, to infrastructure, to penetrative testing to upgrading the data center to SOC to NIST to training, it was a gargantuan undertaking. Since then, I have been watching & monitoring developments in the space more often from the sidelines, including visiting the Cyber Security Summit sessions in Nashville & Atlanta, as well as participating in the panel series from the Private Directors Association®'s Atlanta Chapter. Today, we see a cyber event has shut down a large portion of US dealership ERPs, otherwise known as DMSes, or Dealer Management Systems, from CDK Global. My hope is that this is resolved quickly, for I hate to think of the pain CDK, dealership employees, owners, & customers are experiencing right this minute. BREAKING: CDK Global, a company that provides cloud services for auto dealerships, is experiencing a nearly-complete outage (possibly ransomware, though this hasn't been confirmed). This is one of the risks of relying on cloud services - your office and services can be set up properly and according to your risk tolerance, but if your SaaS provider gets taken down you're still dead in the water. It's still vital to secure your systems. It's also critically important to work through the exercise of, "What is our plan if we can't get to this system for a couple hours? A day? A week?" It does happen. Operations that have done this work will be able to keep running when their competitors have sent everyone home. https://lnkd.in/ePwYaGdP

Public auto dealership groups are challenged by inflation and lower profit per vehicle. Asbury, AutoNation, Group 1, Lithia, Penske, and Sonic continue turning to acquisitions or growing service and parts operations for new revenue. A variety of factors are to blame depending on the company, including reduced vehicle gross profit, rising expenses, increased floorplan costs and continued higher interest rates. Some of the six public groups are partially countering this through acquisitions, particularly Lithia, Asbury and Group 1, which all saw healthy revenue gains because of dealership acquisitions. An Automotive CDP cannot live on a syndicated view of the DMS, a partial integration with CRM, and a pixel on your website. Sorry -- there is a lot more data captured within your dealership...how about deduping scheduled service appointments, tracking chats, phone calls...how about knowing Customer Lifetime Value by understanding profitability of customers...how about knowing the customer is part of your loyalty program, or car wash program...or that they just spent $7,500 in your bodyshop. CDPs with these limited customer "data integrations" -- are missing major aspects of your customer engagement.

I’m sitting here thinking about this wasted trip to the Chevrolet dealership. The system all these dealerships use was “hacked” 2 days ago and it’s still down. They are having to do everything manually since “everything” including the front end alignment machine is connected to this system. Businesses of EVERY size need to take IT security seriously. Purpose-Driven Dallas Headshots Is your headshot saying the right thing about you? We have 20 years experience in Marketing/Advertising, so our photography is from the perspective of delivering the best image to your target audience. We provide more than just taking a nice photo; we are working on MATCHING your image with your audience for the most positive results! The specific name for that is "Visual Marketing Communications." Your headshot is more than just your face. It is your face in the context of the environment the photo is taken in and your wardrobe. This is all "saying" something about you to your viewer. Let look at what these 3 example environmental portraits "say" about you and what makes them targeted to some professions and not others. Make sure you are getting the right headshot for your purposes. So first, the left photo will work for a corporate type headshot - specifically someone who works in a technical (IT), computer science or industrial job. This is NOT fitting for a "friendly and outgoing" type of job - public relations, real estate. Her face and smile friendly, but the context of the photo informs us this is a some industrial space. When you combine the dark outfit with a more vacant and darkish environment, it gives the headshot a SERIOUS tone to it regardless that the smile itself is very friendly. That feeling is a visual message that you work in a more industrial space, as opposed to a interpersonal space (human resources, real estate, therapist, etc.). Second, the middle photo is an environmental portrait. This one should be quite aparent that it is designed to emphasize approach-ability. It lends itself to interaction, to trust. The slight lean forward, the casual pose and jeans, the notebook - it all sends a MESSAGE of someone you can trust and speak with. You can see how the visuals in the headshot is all to show you in the role of a therapist. The relaxed pose helps the viewer also feel relaxed and envision a friendly, trusting relationship with this business woman. Third, the right headshot also has that very friendly smile. But again, the wardrobe and background is darker. This makes it a bad choice for a real estate agent. If you get a headshot where your smile says that you welcome being approached, but the tone of the photo gives a serious feel to keep some distance, then for a public-facing job, this is not smart because it send mixed, contradictory, message. When your photo and your audience have this mismatch, no matter how nice your hair and smile is, it is not a success for BUSINESS purposes. When you want a professional Dallas photographer that is SAVVY to visual marketing communications, your photo gets the RIGHT responses that are more of a FIT for your goals, the business interactions that match your job and career path.
