On Monday, U.S. auto dealers experienced a cyber attack-induced software outage. Some dealers had to resort to manual paperwork as CDK, a technology provider for the car industry, worked to restore systems used by over 15,000 retail locations. The outage affected CDK's dealer management system, which is used for completing deals, tracking store profitability, and monitoring employee compensation. Cliff Steinhauer, an official at The National Cybersecurity Alliance, stated that the outage has "significantly slowed down" operations in the auto retail industry. Almost 2,000 people attended ComplyAuto’s webinar "CDK Cyber Incident Update and What's Next For Dealers" which is now available to watch for anyone who registered. Automotive industry experts, Chris Cleveland and Brad Miller, went well over the one hour allotted time answering questions but since they couldn’t get to all of them, we’re putting together a FAQ. We’ve been working hard to find ways to help dealerships, including those that aren’t our customers (yet). Make sure to subscribe to our newsletter to receive more information. 🍀 Have you been affected by the CDK incident? Have you been at a dealership recently? Either to buy a vehicle or get it serviced? What’s been your experience? #automotive #dealership #cardealer

Director of Cyber Threat Intelligence @ BLOKWORX | Threat Analysis, Countermeasures, Content Creation, Reformed Hacker and Deep Learning Fanatic.
It's adorable to think there was a "secondary threat actor" which "forced the hand" of the first threat actor, but this isn't Hollywood. The reality is the target was soft, the automotive industry has already run on outdated software (the key management system for dealerships was still running on Windows 7 not more than a couple years ago). CDK, like many other companies, put security as a secondary (or lower) in comparison to guaranteeing profit margins and focusing on anything else aside from keeping customer data safe. Was it because they are not competent in #cybersecurity or was it their technology was just lacking? I can tell you this, a #prevention first solution would have kept them safe (neither of the endpoint solutions quoted could have stopped this, just being transparent for those thinking they should scramble to use them). Combine this with the current issues at the Federal Reserve and the time has come to ditch the "known" solutions (they are not innovating and care more about incident response which means AFTER you are screwed, they will profit more than helping you prevent the incident) and get with practitioners that want to keep you safe.
🛡️ Andy Thompson, CISSP, GPEN 🛡️, Offensive Cybersecurity Research Evangelist at CyberArk, noted the possibility of multiple threat actors: “One thought to consider is if there were multiple threat actors involved, which is often the case. If that was the case here, there often comes a time when one threat actor strikes first and forces the hand of the other.” Satnam Narang, Senior Staff Research Engineer at Tenable, emphasized the opportunistic nature of such attacks: “Ransomware affiliates will target all of the fish in the sea in hopes of catching a big one because they know that’s where the biggest payout comes from.” https://lnkd.in/g3tkJj_7 https://lnkd.in/g3tkJj_7
