User Research Case Study Understanding New Yorkers in Relation to Construction by Krystal Ebron The NYC Department of Design & Construction (DDC) provides communities with new or renovated structures such as firehouses, libraries, police precincts, courthouses, and senior centers. They also offer sidewalks, street reconstruction, water mains, sewers, and pedestrian ramps—quality infrastructure essential for a healthy, resilient city. The DDC wanted our help finding ways to better inform the people of NYC about the construction going on around the area. Through observational fieldwork, diary studies, and co-design sessions, we identified ways they could better curate information through various touchpoints, increase awareness about ongoing projects to alleviate inconveniences, and more carefully consider the needs of people with mobility-related accessibility needs. Great opening night at the Reimagining Justice Film Festival (3 of 5) yesterday evening, AIA New York | Center for Architecture Motoko Shoboji AIA NOMA LEED AP World premiere of Rising Above the Tide: Redefining Resilience in Hau’ula by journalist/documentary film maker @Jake Price: For the past 20 years, the nearly 4,100 residents of Hau’ula on Oahu have witnessed rising tides and increasingly powerful storms. In 2020, Hurricane Douglas narrowly missed the small town, passing just 20 miles away. Residents fear they may not be so fortunate with the next major storm. Located on the vulnerable one lane Kamehameha Highway, which is already eroding due to climate change, authorities have warned that in the event of a disaster, Hau’ula and the surrounding towns (totaling around 26,000 people) could be cut off from aid for up to 30 days, as disaster relief efforts focus on the urban areas of Honolulu. Despite these looming threats, Hau’ula and its neighboring communities lack a storm shelter that can keep residents safe. Rising Above the Tide: Redefining Resilience in Hau’ula chronicles the efforts of the Hau’ula community and #architect Illya Azaroff, FAIA, with +LAB Architect PLLC. one of the few who has heard and responded to the community's pleas. In the United States, architecture evolved as a highly organized profession when a group of prominent architects, including Richard Morris Hunt, launched the AIA (American Institute of Architects). On February 23, 1857, 13 architects meet in Richard Upjohn’s office in Manhattan, forming what would become the American Institute of Architects (AIA) to “promote the scientific and practical perfection of its members” and “elevate the standing of the profession.” Until this point, anyone who wished to call themselves an architect -- including masons, carpenters, bricklayers, and other members of the building trade -- could do so. By the mid-1860s, architects from other cities sought to join the AIA. Members decided that chapters would be formed in cities across America and make their original group the first official local chapter. The need for a professional organization of architects in Utah coincided with a state-imposed registration procedure for the profession. The earliest roster of architects is dated June 1911 and consisted of a large number of well-known architect-builders and architects. The majority came from Salt Lake City; however, a number also represented such cities as Provo, Logan, and Ogden. The earliest professional organization - the "Utah Association of Architects" - was established in 1911. In 1919 the professional community was invited to the "Institute of Utah Architects." It is unclear whether this was simply a renaming of the earlier organization or a new professional group. In 1921, Utah received its charter for the Utah Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The chapter's territory included all of Utah as well as 32 counties of Idaho. Fast forward to 2024 and for the first time in its 103-year history, the Utah Chapter has a fully female executive leadership team. #ArchitectureWeek #AIAUtah #history 📸 CRSA Architecture

New York City is filled with architectural beauty and brilliantly designed spaces and buildings. This June, New Yorkers can nominate the best new projects that enhance the city’s public realm for the 2024 MASterworks Awards, held annually by the Municipal Art Society of New York! Established in 2001, the MASterworks Awards pay tribute to projects completed in the previous year that exemplify excellence in architecture and urban design. The call for nominations for the 2024 MASterworks Design Awards is now open to the public through Monday, July 8th. Projects can be nominated in up to two of the following categories: ● Best New Building for outstanding architectural design, ● Best Urban Landscape for a new or revitalized open space that contributes to livability and resilience, ● Best Restoration for a project that expertly enhances the original qualities of a significant historic building or structure, ● Best Adaptive Reuse for a project that demonstrates exceptional creativity in adaptive reuse of an existing building or structure, ● Best New Infrastructure for distinctive design in public service projects, and ● Best New Urban Amenity for an addition to the built environment that contributes to a more livable city. ● Best Environmental Innovation for an exceptional project that enhances the environmental resiliency of the city All nominated projects must be located in New York City and have a completion date during 2023. Nominations should include projects that have made a significant contribution to New York City’s built environment. In high school, I considered a career in architecture. I always marveled at the New York skyline and thought it would be so amazing to construct a building. But alas, after some classes, I realized it was too math heavy and formal for me. What I find interesting today is how I migrated to design where in our field of product design there are many analogies to physically building a structure. Here are a few. 1. Prototyping: Both fields create prototypes to visualize and test ideas before final production. Architects build models and mock-ups, while product designers develop digital prototypes. 2. User-Centric Design: Both disciplines emphasize understanding the needs and behaviors of users. Architects consider how people will interact with and use a space, while product designers focus on user experience and journeys. 3. Iterative Development: Both fields employ an iterative design process, continually refining and improving their designs based on feedback and testing. 4. Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Architects and product designers often work in teams with various experts, such as engineers, quality assurance controllers, and stakeholders, to ensure all aspects of the design are addressed. 5. Accessibility Guidelines: Both disciplines follow specific guidelines to ensure their designs are accessible to all users, including those with disabilities. Architects adhere to building codes and standards like the ADA, while product designers follow WCA3 guidelines. 6. Design and Building Systems: Both fields use comprehensive systems to ensure consistency and quality in their work. Product designers use design systems that include guidelines, reusable components, and standards. Similarly, architects use building systems, building codes and standards, modular construction techniques, architectural patterns, style guides, and Building Information Modeling (BIM) to manage and streamline the design and construction process.
