Founded in 1976, concurrently with its sister foundation in France, the French-American Foundation - United States is the only non-governmental organization in the United States dedicated specifically to strengthening the relationship between the two countries. It does so by bringing together leaders, policy makers, and a full range of professionals to exchange views, share best practices and consider how each country might benefit from the expertise and experience of the other.

They accomplish this mission through conferences and study tours on subjects such as national security and defense, sustainability, equality of opportunity (for universal access to education, employment and health care), business, media and culture.

    The Young Leaders Program

The program was created in 1981 in response to observations that the close working relationships between French and American leaders in the post-war period were waning as new, younger leaders rose with little exposure to their transatlantic counterparts. Organized in collaboration with our sister Foundation in France, the program takes small groups of carefully selected up-and-coming leaders in government, business, media, military, culture and the non-profit sector. The program provides them with the opportunity to spend five days together discussing issues of common concern and, more importantly, getting to know each other. The relaxed atmosphere and the off-the-record nature of the conferences have fostered trenchant and open discussions of policy and social issues and have been very successful in facilitating the development of a new network of transatlantic leaders. Since 1981, Young Leaders meetings have been attended by more than 300 influential men and women, many of whom have gone on to positions of significant responsibility.
