Because we work with healthcare organizations, the first question I ever asked at a HubSpot Partner Day was "Will HubSpot ever be HIPAA compliant?" (This was about seven years ago.) The answer was pretty frank.
"It's not on the roadmap."
Like with all things HubSpot, one just has to be patient. While not technically there yet, it can now be accomplished. As a practical matter, two things have occurred to make this a reality. One is the advancements among EHR systems to allow for better integrations. The other is the ability to encrypt information in HubSpot. I asked Zachary Lyons and Kevin Campbell from Hypha HubSpot Development to explain how it works:
"When it comes to HIPAA compliance, integrating systems with HubSpot can be tricky. However, by leveraging HubSpot's UI extensions, users can create custom data cards that can create a quick and easy link to that data and external systems. These extensions act as a direct bridge between HubSpot and your external tools. Want to see a client's health information? Not a problem! By leveraging these tools, companies can stay 100% HIPAA compliant, while also empowering teams with the data that they need in order to be successful with the HubSpot tools."
In many ways this is an optimal arrangement. SaaS platforms and CRMs like HubSpot and others are meant for multiple scenarios/industries. Today, 96% of hospitals and 80% of physician practices have adopted EHR systems to manage Personally Identifiable Information (PII) and Protected Health Information (PHI). This is one of those instances where proprietary compliance solutions are the best option as the source of truth for patient data.
But using EHRs for front office usage like marketing, scheduling, tasks, reminders, follow ups, etc. can be frustrating. So the best of both worlds is to have a powerful front end system like HubSpot tied into your compliance system. That way you can protect patients and respect privacy while optimizing your business operations.
