📚🥇🥂 Celebrating Excellence in French-to-English Translation! On Tuesday, June 18th, the French-American Foundation - United States was thrilled to honor the winners of the 37th Annual #TranslationPrize at our annual Awards Ceremony, held at the Strand Book Store's Rare Book Room in New York City. For nearly 40 years, the Translation Prize has served as a valuable channel for French-American cultural exchange, putting French-to-English translators in the spotlight and bringing awareness to important works of French literature newly available to American readers. After a festive opening cocktail, guests had the distinguished pleasure of hearing from keynote speaker Jonathan Galassi, Chairman and Executive Editor of Farrar, Straus and Giroux. In his presentation and Q&A, Mr. Galassi - himself an esteemed poet and translator - emphasized the importance of recognizing translators for their work in bridging literary and cultural divides: “Translation is culture,” he says plainly, stating that, without it, we would not have access to the greatest cultural treasures – produced outside of our native tongue – of our time. Mr. Galassi also shared his valuable perspective on the impact that emerging technologies, such as #AI, could have on the landscape of literary #translation. During the presentation of the awards, winning translators Frank Wynne (fiction) and Angela Hunter & Rebecca Wilkin (nonfiction) delivered remarks on their winning translations and creative processes, their journeys to becoming Francophiles, and what winning the Prize means to them. Each also gave a special live reading of an excerpt from their winning translations. From Wynne’s masterful and erudite translation of Mathias Énard’s rich feast of #literary excesses, to Hunter and Wilkin’s triumph in bringing the work of 18th century French #feminist philosopher Louise Dupin to the Anglophone forefront, there was an abundance of remarkable achievements to celebrate. Discover the winners and their work: https://lnkd.in/eBp3ayJ8 Read a full debrief of the ceremony: https://lnkd.in/eWyHDy4D The Foundation extends special thanks to our Board of Directors and the Florence Gould Foundation, whose generous support makes this program possible. Our sincere gratitude also goes to Jonathan Galassi, Frank Wynne, Angela Hunter, Rebecca Wilkin, our jurors Chris Clarke, Kate Deimling, Tess Lewis, Sandra Smith, James Swenson, and Corine Tachtiris, and the teams at The Strand and Great Performances for making the evening such a wonderful success. Thank you to all who attended, and we look forward to celebrating the art of translation again with you next year!

"What the allies did here 80 years ago far surpassed anything we could have done on our own," said U.S. President Biden today, on the 80th anniversary of the Allies' D-Day operation in 1944. Over 70,000 U.S. troops landed in Normandy to free France from Nazi occupation -- a reminder of the powerful alliance between the two countries and their shared dedication to protect democracy worldwide. This enduring bond was honored in 2021 when, with the French-American Foundation - France, French and American Young Leaders gathered in Normandy to visit Omaha Beach, the American Cemetery and the Caen WWII memorial. Together, they reflected on the debt we owe to those who came before us, and on our responsibility to future generations to protect the historic French-American relationship. To pay tribute to the Franco-American alliance and the sacrifices made on June 6, 1944, Young Leaders participated in a moving wreath-laying ceremony to honor the lives of soldiers lost on D-Day. President Macron's and President Biden's words and cooperative leadership remind us of the importance of transatlantic solidarity. The French-American Foundation - United States is proud to play a role in sustaining and strengthening its relationship with its oldest ally, and is profoundly grateful for the French and American soldiers who gave their lives fighting alongside one another for the future of democracy. #frenchamerican #francoamerican #dday #neverforget
