Ampere announces 256-core 3nm #CPU, unveils partnership with Qualcomm 💡 Also looking at #chiplets, integration of third-party #IP Ampere Computing introduced its roadmap for the coming years, including new #CPUs and collaborations with third parties. In particular, the company said it would launch its all-new 256-core AmpereOne #processor next year, made on TSMC's N3 process #technology. Also, Ampere is teaming up with Qualcomm to build #AI inference #servers with the company's accelerators. Apparently, Huawei is also looking at integrating third-party UCIe-compatible #chiplets into its own platforms. Ampere has begun shipping 192-core AmpereOne processors with an eight-channel DDR5 memory subsystem it introduced a year ago. Western Digital Talks High-Density BICS8 2TB QLC #NANDFlash on a single #Memory #Chip 🤩🤯💡 #WesternDigital previewed its new #BICS8 (218-layer) QLC #NAND #flash memory chip with a 2TB capacity at recent investor activities. This chip is recognized for having the highest density in the industry. The BICS8 2TB QLC NAND flash memory chip is designed specifically for #datacenters and #artificialintelligence (#AI) applications. It aims to reduce the cost of high-capacity enterprise-level solid-state drives (#SSDs) and meet the growing demand for large-scale #datastorage solutions. A flash memory particle consists of multiple flash memory chips stacked and packaged together. A single chip with 2TB capacity allows Western Digital to offer 4TB capacity particles through 16-layer stacking, which facilitates the development of future 128TB or even 256TB enterprise-level SSDs. Robert Soderbery, the General Manager of Western Digital's flash memory business, demonstrated the BICS8 2TB QLC NAND flash memory chip at the event. The chip is approximately the width of a fingertip. Western Digital's BICS8 #technology, developed in partnership with KIOXIA Group, uses a CBA (Complementary Bonding Approach) technology similar to Yangtze Memory Technologies Xtacking. This method involves manufacturing the storage stack and #CMOS control circuit separately, then #hybridbonding the two parts. This approach enhances the read and write performance of the flash memory while increasing overall storage density and reducing power consumption. Micron Technology unveils QLC NAND #SSD with more than 200 layers 💡 #Micron has launched a 2500 QLC NAND internal fit client product that’s faster than its 2550 TLC predecessor, despite TLC #NAND typically being quicker than QLC NAND. TLC (triple level cell) NAND has 3 bits per cell while QLC (quad level cell) has 4 bits per cell, meaning the #SSD's controller has to negotiate QLC’s 16 voltage states per cell instead of 8 with TLC. It takes longer to read and write individual cells unless the controller #firmware gets clever with such things as a very fast SLC (1 bit/cell) cache, and parallel #data plane access. Micron’s 2500 is claimed to be the first 200-plus layer QLC drive for OEM #desktop and #notebook (client) #computers. It uses 232-layer QLC NAND, and this gives it 30 percent more density, Micron says, than its 2400 176-layer QLC product, and 31 percent more than its 232-layer TLC NAND, as used in the 2550 M.2 format SSD. This was launched in December 2022 so it has taken 16 months to add the extra bit to the 232-layer NAND cells used in the 2500. What Works Best For #Chiplets 💡 Not all chiplets are interchangeable, and options will be limited The #semiconductorindustry is preparing for the migration from proprietary chiplet-based systems to a more open #chiplet ecosystem, in which chiplets fabricated by different companies of various #technologies and device nodes can be integrated in a single package with acceptable yield. To make this work as expected, the #chip industry will have to solve a variety of well-documented technical and business issues, and it will have to rein in some of the grander visions of what’s possible — at least initially. The basic challenge is aligning domain-specific performance demands of end systems, which contain a growing number of chiplets, with the assembly and packaging capabilities and methodologies of #IDM, #foundry, and #OSAT. This includes the creation of assembly development kits (ADKs) that are roughly the equivalent of process development kits (PDKs), which today are codified with manufacturing specifications. Chiplets are a growing trend, especially in the #HPC and #networking segments, with potential to scale to other applications,” said Gabriela Pereira, #technology and market analyst for #semiconductor packaging at Yole Intelligence. “The industry has understood that high-end advanced packaging technologies are needed to connect them — but that’s much more complex than it seems. #Samsung Tapes Out Its First 3nm #Smartphone #SoC, Gets A Boost From Synopsys Inc #AI-Enabled Tools 💡 This week Samsung Electronics and #Synopsys announced that Samsung has taped out its first mobile system-on-chip on Samsung Foundry's 3nm gate-all-around (GAA) process #technology. The announcement, coming from electronic design automation Synopsys, further notes that Samsung used the Synopsys.ai EDA suite to place-n-route the layout and verify design of the SoC, which in turn enabled higher performance. Samsung's unnamed high-performance mobile SoC relies on 'flagship' general-purpose #CPU and #GPU architectures as well as various #IP blocks from Synopsys. SoC designers used Synopsys.ai #EDA #software, including the Synopsys DSO.ai to fine-tune design and maximize yields as well as Synopsys Fusion Compiler RTL-to-GDSII solution to achieve higher performance, lower power, and optimize area (#PPA). Advanced Packaging Is Radically Reshaping the #Chip Ecosystem 💡 Periodically, analysts commenting on the chip industry will pronounce that Moore’s Law is obsolete. Yet while the speed of progress is slowing down, #chipmakers are still doubling the number of #transistors on an integrated circuit (#IC) approximately every 2.5 years. In the past, fundamentally new approaches for chip design never seemed to catch on. That’s no longer the case as fresh ideas that are essential for running some of today’s most important applications are rapidly gaining favor. One of the most significant of these new concepts is #advancedpackaging, which essentially accommodates an ever-increasing number of transistors by decreasing the size of electrical contacts. Traditionally, a #semiconductor chip focuses on performing one particular action or process. By comparison, an advanced multichip package incorporates multiple chips and processes into one component. This transformative approach integrates a multitude of semiconductor components into a single package, directly addressing the most critical semiconductor technical and commercial constraints. In the fiercely competitive semiconductor industry, companies are in a constant battle to retain top talent because in the heart of every good engineer is a passionate problem solver, looking for their next challenge. For them, innovation is the currency of success. Yet companies like Qualcomm, Intel, and Broadcom attract tens of thousands every year by dangling lucrative compensation packages to lure them from competitors. Startup leaders don’t have those resources, so they have to work harder to attract the best talent and then fight like hell to retain them. But some of the most successful startup leaders I know take a different approach. Rather than viewing attraction and retention as a fight, they leverage the inherent qualities of their companies as their advantage. They use their nimbleness, bias toward innovation, and their collaborative cultures like superpowers to attract the right people and those usually end up being the reasons why people stay. Take Richard Fung, CEO of The Six Semiconductor, for example. I had a conversation with Richard and asked him to share his approach to motivating his team. His response was like a mini-masterclass on the topic of talent attraction and retention. Richard emphasized that a culture that encourages engineers to dive deep into the intricacies of their craft, understand the systems they’re building, and connect with the end customer is a successful culture. Richard has been using this approach and it's been paying dividends for The Six Semiconductor so in his honor, here are his six key concepts for creating this type of organization: 1. Foster a Learning Culture: Support ongoing learning and skill development beyond employees' core responsibilities. 2. Prioritize Customer Focus: Embed a customer-centric mindset, and encourage employees to enhance user experiences through their work. 3. Champion Problem-Solving: Empower employees to creatively solve challenges with a focus on customer needs. 4. Promote System-Level Understanding: Encourage employees to grasp the bigger picture of the company's offerings and their role within it. 5. Break Down Silos: Promote collaboration to ensure a comprehensive understanding of projects across teams. 6. Offer Meaningful Challenges: Provide intellectually stimulating projects that make a tangible impact on the company's success. What Richard highlighted is that success goes much deeper than getting great people to join. It's about unleashing the full potential of every individual on your team to drive innovation and help shape the company, and ensuring your team heads in the right direction together. I’m thrilled I got to learn Richard’s perspective and believe other leaders can benefit from hearing it, so I shared the video below. KIOXIA Group ends production cutting strategy — 3D #NAND prices could stabilize or decline 💡 After more than 1.5 years of underutilization #Kioxia has resumed full production after 20 months of cuts. Improved market conditions are behind the changes, reports Nikkei. This potentially means that the world's fourth-largest maker of 3D NAND is back to competing for market share, which could mean price drops for #flashmemory. The company has also secured refinancing of ¥540 billion ($3.424 billion) and a new line of credit worth ¥210 billion ($1.332 billion) from its lenders. In June, Kioxia increased production to full capacity at its #Yokkaichi and #Kitakami plants, which produce NAND #flash #memory, the report says. The production cuts, which began in October 2022, were a response to declining demand for Kioxia's 3D NAND memory designed for #smartphones, with reductions exceeding 30% at their peak. Additionally, the launch of a new fab at the Kitakami site has been delayed from 2023 to at least 2025. SK hynix: #GDDR7 Mass Production To Start in Q1'2025 Being a major JEDEC #memory standard, GDDR7 is slated to be produced by all three of the Big Three memory #manufacturers. But it seems that not all three vendors will be kicking off mass production at the same time. #SKhynix was at this year's #Computex trade show, showing off their full lineup of memory #technologies – including, of course, GDDR7. SK hynix is the last of the major memory vendor's we've seen promoting their memory, and fittingly, they seem to be the last in terms of their mass production schedule. According to company representatives at the show, the firm will not kick off mass production of their GDDR7 chips until the first quarter of 2025.
