85% of business leaders agree a well-functioning democracy is essential to U.S. capitalism, but 78% are concerned about the state of democracy in the United States today. "I already have a communications team." Is there a scientist among them? PR, social media, and UX/UI folx expertly build awareness and, depending on your product, bring consumers to your door. But when it comes to stakeholders -- I'm talking funders, regulators, policymakers, community groups, affiliates, enterprise clients -- they want to dig deeper. To check your math, so to speak. These are the people you create reports, briefs, white papers, and proposals for. The ones who want a sophisticated, persuasive document that show you're worth your salt. The ones whose impression of you will determine the impact your initiative will -- or won't -- have. Don't ask your Marketing Lead to proofread your white paper. She's trained in communications, not science and engineering. She'll do her best. But she'll end up skirting around the technical explanations. Or watering down their robustness. (And honestly, she has enough work already.) Don't miss the chance to make a lasting impression on those all-important stakeholders. Get a Science Interpreter. When you see the results (and the TIME you'll not be spending eeking out a report over the weekend) you'll be glad you did.

Thanks to everyone who attended this week’s conversation about responding to audience loss.  A recording of the webinar (w/presentation warts and all) and the deck are here. https://lnkd.in/ggXMHvzV The question we started to explore was: “How might we (as stations, NPR and other content providers, and as leaders shaping the culture of our organizations) earn back 50% of the audience most stations have lost in the past few years?”   Let’s keep the conversation going. Just this morning, Mikel Ellcessor shared this essay (https://lnkd.in/gE8EGzJW) about “News as Product.” If that idea makes you wince or cheer, here’s the core idea in the piece, which resonates with the discussion in the webinar:   “What does product-market-fit mean? Putting it in journalistic coverage terms … For example, if your newsroom is very good at crime headlines reporting with articles on your website, but your audience for that content is shrinking. You need to make a change - and I’m not gonna be sheepish about this, you may need to scrap that reporting or deeply reduce it. Life of a New YouTuber 🥴 I tried to adjust the aperture on my SONY RX VII camera to achieve a beautiful depth-of-field effect in my video. However, upon reviewing the footage later, I realized it was blurry. It was frustrating, but I eventually reshot the footage without the depth-of-field effect and added a Gaussian Blur effect using Adobe Premiere Pro during editing. While the effect wasn't as clean as I wanted, I'm improving using the pen tool. These technical difficulties caused me to miss my weekly post schedule, but I didn't let them discourage me. I still managed to complete the work within the week. This experience taught me not to be too hard on myself when I miss a deadline due to technical difficulties. What's important to me is creating high-quality, well-written, visually appealing content with music that sets the right tone and adds value to my viewers. This is the textbook example of someone who is very articulate, has the perfect resume & yet - is precisely a huge part of the problem here in America in 2024. Utterly nonsense and propaganda is all that she offers. She does it intelligently, so many follow her like sheep. Here's a few ideas - 1. How about hiring some conservatives, Christians, Veterans, law enforcement, hunters & fisherman on the team there at NPR??? Your newsroom has a ratio of 87 Democrats and ZERO Republicans. When she refers to BALANCE, is this balance?? 2. Stop referring to people you don't like as racists. This woman (who is Caucasian) states openly & proudly, that she HATES ALL WHITE PEOPLE! 3. Disagreeing with someone doesn't make you right. She talks about BALANCE and PRODUCTIVE FRICTION. Don't make me laugh 🤣🤣🤣 Your entire employed staff ARE DEMOCRATS, SAUL ALINSKY LOVERS, COMMUNISTS, ISLAMIC JIHADISTS, BLM, ANTIFA, CCP, MARXISTS, WEATHER UNDERGROUND FANS, THOUSAND CURRENTS LOVERS - ALL CRIMINALS & TRAITORS THAT HATE AMERICA. Does your digital advocacy campaign need a bubble bath? Axios has identified 12 bubbles impacting the 2024 presidential campaign and there are implications for issue advocacy here as well. It's useful to think in "bubbles"- it provides a way of thinking about reaching your audience that's less tactical than thinking channel by channel. How many places can you reach your audience? How can you surround them with your message in their bubble? And be nimble...bubbles burst. And new ones form.

What are some creative ways to thank donors? Here's one idea from a recent post I wrote: Create a private Facebook group for donors to gain exclusive access to your organization. Donors crave community and want to feel connected to your cause and to other people. Creating an environment where donors can connect with people who share their passions transfers intimacy of the community into your relationship with the donor. This could be as simple as creating a secret Facebook Group where you invite specific donors to participate. Have content ready to start the conversation in the group. Facilitating – so much more than just managing a meeting. With my Community Broadcasting hat on, I recently spent the day being ’facilitated’. Bryce Ives had the challenge of leading a bunch of talkative diverse humans in an important discussion about the future of media, and boy did he do a great job! It got me thinking more about the art and skill of facilitating productive gatherings. Facilitation is a dry word to describe a process that is really quite magical. You have heard of 'cat herding'. Wrangling humans - particularly large numbers of humans - is even trickier! You might be thinking, how do I do that? You might even be terrified to try that for the first time. Learning at the feet of some inspiring facilitators (hello Heidi Martin, Kevin Nuttall, Randall Pearce, Paul Taylor, Nancy Hromin, Kate Chaffer and many more), here are a few tips if you find yourself in the facilitation hot seat for the first time: Be crystal clear about the outcome.🎯 What are you here to do? State it up front, test it with everyone, revisit it as the session goes on. There is nothing more dispiriting than a gab fest with no outcome. Bite sized chunks are your friend. 🧩 Plan the session ahead of time and don’t try to squeeze in too much. Imagine the session like you are giving directions – first you go here, then you go there. After a series of steps you get to the outcome. Try walking and talking. 👨🏼‍🦽 If ever I need ideas, I walk. Taking a stroll with a partner is a relaxed way to have a chat. Send your participants in pairs for a trot around the block and be surprised at what they come back with. Keep it pacey and upbeat. 🙂 Dwelling too long on anything is the enemy of good facilitation. ‘Hit it with pace’ as my favourite Bachelor used to say. Respect the group's time and energy. ⏱️ Keep an eye on the clock and check in on energy levels as you go. And beware the dreaded ‘afternoon slump’ - not even the mints will get you through that!
