Learning Day 996: The recent decision by Twitch to retract its updated content policy is a stark reminder of the power and necessity of community engagement in shaping digital landscapes. It's a moment that brings to the forefront an ongoing debate: what constitutes acceptable content, especially when it comes to nudity? The increasingly fine line between artistic expression and content deemed inappropriate calls for a community-driven approach to define these boundaries. As users, we're not just participants but stakeholders in the platforms we frequent. It's imperative that these spaces don't merely impose standards, but rather, actively involve us in establishing them! This is less about traditional content moderation and more about co-creating a shared digital culture! By empowering users to collaborate on context-sensitive guidelines, platforms can create a governance model that embodies the collective voice. This collaborative model not only ensures that standards for content like nudity are clear and applicable, but also that they dynamically evolve with the community's values. It's about recognizing the unique strengths of a platform that can adapt to diverse perspectives and the ever-changing nuances of online expression. This way, we're not just passive observers but active architects of the digital ecosystems that we value and want to see flourish. When users are empowered to delineate the shape of their community, the platform becomes more than a service; it becomes a reflection of the vibrant and varied human experience. It's in this empowerment and collaboration that a platform finds its true differentiation and strength. #businessthey
Twitch recently rolled back the new nudity policies - depictions of fictional nudity are no longer allowed. What happened? When Twitch announced the newer more relaxed policies about sexual content Wednesday - streamers took this as an opportunity to test the boundaries- and many top streamers started showing NSFW content - and many like PayMoneyWubby got banned. I suspect the thinking behind Twitch's initial policy change was hey - if we allow folks to post NSFW content but require them to label it - it just makes it easier to moderate. They didn't realize that the change would also encourage *more* NSFW content to be posted in the first place - and how creators would react. Companies could benefit from bringing creators more before rolling out content changes - as Peter Hollens 🟣 has been working on. What do you think?

While a few can appreciate the pioneering attempt from the perspective that not many Large-Traffic Social Media/Content Platforms actually make dramatic changes to NSFW Policies in short periods of time as twitch has, this is a result almost anyone could have predicted. While artistic expressions definitely should be encouraged in the right ways, the phrase- "Give an inch, and they will take a mile" is taken to heart when the largest group of ambitious live content creators in the world have been given the opportunity, something that twitch was fully aware of, and kept in mind when rolling these changes out. In Conclusion, this rollback made sense on two fronts: 1. The Goal of Ease of moderation: Twitch seems to be shying away from Black/White rulings on topics that include forms of expression and art in order to push forward creative ideas and streams of more unique content that can be seen on their platform. A full black/white ruling would prevent them from obtaining this goal, but as a result, they will probably be experimenting with these rules a little longer, feeling the growing pains that arise. 2. Marketing: it is no secret that N S F W content in most capacities is frowned upon by most AAA company advertisers and their marketing teams even if it is being labeled and only a fraction from the main percentage of content on a website. this definitely can and/or will play a role in TOS decisions like these, as it is a main source of revenue for any streaming/video service with young consumers/target audiences.
