Waymo dumps its waitlist and opens up its San Francisco robotaxi service to everyone The self-driving car-service said that anyone can download the app and then immediately hail one of its robotaxis in San Francisco. Its established a waitlist, had almost 300,000 people sign up with a few hundred currently waiting to use the service. Waymo has not yet expanded its driverless commercial operations to San Francisco freeways or communities in the greater Peninsula, although the company is testing in those areas. Thoughts? I don’t know where to begin with this one…the Tesla board must all be aligned and standing united behind their CEO! Bigger picture is interesting. What are the real plans for supercharging? I’m between EV’s and the network is what defines my choice. It’s bloody good and perhaps too cheap? It’s also 400V but that’s more than adequate. What’s the car strategy now Chinese competion is eating at Tesla sales? What’s Tesla’s HEMS play with storage and the home? What’s Tesla’s energy services strategy? I assume their UK energy supply business is on hold? And the big one is there a big AI play on building and selling the car automation. This will need a lot of investment and it may end up with millions of less smart non Tesla EV’s on the road. Guess we’ll find out soon. Several years ago when I thought the incumbents would rise to meet this challenge I expected Tesla to eventually end up with a small but significant market share in the higher end sector but the long term winners in this sector are still to emerge and China looks un stoppable. Somehow Western governments and incumbents have gifted the benefits of building the 4th Industrial Revolution to others. Even with really impressive innovation from Tesla and others.

Thinking about the near future… With autonomous vehicles becoming a reality, evident through recent advancements like Waymo’s rollout in SF, PHX, and Austin, Tesla’s autotaxi plan reveal coming on Aug 8th, and Cruise securing an additional $850m from GM for a relaunch - the future of autonomous transportation is feeling more inevitable. IMO, these developments point towards momentum that now seem like there’s a high probability of a wide rollout in the next 5-10 years. However, critical questions remain unanswered as we seem behind the curve of time to resolve key issues. Here’s a few I think about… - How many vehicles will actually be needed when utilization rate goes up to 90%+ (today most vehicles sit idle in garages most of the time) - What happens to home garages when car ownership becomes obsolete? - How can we repurpose concrete parking spaces in urban and suburban areas? - What role will retail spaces play in the era of quick deliveries? - How do we reimagine downtown roadways with reduced congestion due to autonomous cars? - Where do we redirect long-haul truckers in terms of profession? - What size of roads is necessary when autonomous fleets drive efficiently close and at high speeds? - What is the fate of prime gas station real estate in the electric vehicle era? - How will insurance for cars evolve in the face of autonomous driving? To policy makers, urban planners, insurance companies, retailers, service providers, and others, the impending changes in the global vehicle industrial complex, oil & gas industry, and infrastructure demand strategic planning. What's your plan for the future? I’m sure this is just the tip of the iceberg with autonomy coming in vehicles and other embodied things. Property owners looking at EV charging mandates (either from government, employees or tenants) are going to learn what Tesla already knows -- EV charging economics are brutal. Focus on the amenity and make sure you have ample budget for O&M that is not dependent on charging revenues and that energy analytics can clearly show what is EV and what is building load with Gridium. https://lnkd.in/g_6TvStP

We all have a lot of different needs when it comes to our vehicles. For some, it’s the daily commute, for others, it's long journeys on the open road. At this point, there’s less concern about whether electric vehicles can do the day-to-day drives as charging technology and infrastructure are improving. What about those long-distance trips? I was so excited when I came across this EV road trip planner from The Chronicle. It helps drivers compare trips for popular electric models, but the same idea can be applied to any EV you want. Keep in mind consumption and charging curves when ensuring you arrive at your destination with some battery left. Range worries can be a thing of the past, it’s possible to have hassle-free road trips in your new electric ride! Revolutionizing LA's Streets: Waymo's Autonomous Leap Forward As an enthusiastic follower of autonomous vehicle technology, I have been eager to see its launch and evolution across the LA landscape. I have been closely following the driverless ride-hailing space and mind-blowing advances for some time. I’ve even been fortunate enough to experience several test rides firsthand already. It is difficult to describe the smile you'll have the minute your car pulls up and you get in. You'll surprisingly adjust within minutes and be amazed looking at the self moving steering wheel. I recently gained insight around Waymo's path to rolling out full commercial services locally, something i've been eagerly following. They have been dynamically testing unfared vehicles in designated LA zones under CPUC and DMV supervision since January 2023. During this test phase, they’ve offered free rides to vetted participants like those with access passes. The expanded authorization on January 11, 2024 from the DMV allows Waymo to test vehicles across wider swaths of metro LA including Santa Monica and Hawthorne. Waymo has now filed a request with the CPUC on January 19, 2023 to offer rides for payment in those expanded domains. Get yourself on the waitlist. The full filing linked here provides their updated Passenger Safety Plan submitted as part of seeking CPUC approval to finally charge fares across newly accessible areas. This is likely to go quickly and I anticipate they'll be charging for rides by the end of March. https://lnkd.in/gFheDBHi I’m hopeful these geo-targeted robo-taxis can someday tame parking nightmares, reduce accidents and traffic jams while connecting communities across our sprawl. Waymo seems to share local leaders’ care for mindful integration. As LA prepares for the 2028 Olympic spotlight on reviving transit, I eagerly anticipate the role innovators like Waymo might play in continuing momentum. LA residents can learn more about the technology powering this futuristic rideshare at a Waymo pop-up tour event on January 24th from 12-4PM at Silver Lake's trendy Erewhon Market. Some areas listed include: Los Angeles (City and County) Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, Culver City, Santa Monica Hawthorne, El Segundo, Inglewood, Gardena, Vernon, Compton Road Types: Freeways, highways, city streets, rural roads and Parking lots Speed Limits: Waymo's ODD includes roads with posted speed limits up to 65 mph Here is a video of the depot where many of the Waymo cars are stored here in LA.

⚡It's just like magic⚡ An estimated 250,000 electric vehicles will be on Oregon's roads by 2025. To fuel them, we'll need more charging options, especially for customers who do not have access to home charging. Portland General Electric recently demonstrated a pole mounted level 2 EV charger that retracts the charging cable from above and extends up to 25 feet after a user scans a QR code. Rose “AHH! It’s going faster 😁” Are EVs exciting to drive? Yes! Both inside and apparently watching from outside too. This is from the Electrify Expo high speed experience track in Long Beach. Data shows conversion of buyers from ICE to EV most pronounced when people get behind the wheel and experience it first-hand (comment below if you want a link to my article with the research). EVs have tremendous, instant, torque, a very low center of gravity, and usually power to all four wheels. I find them thrilling to drive, especially launching off the line. How about you? Elon Musk tweeted today that Tesla is putting $500 million towards expanding its Supercharger network this year. How many new stations could they build roughly? Based on data from Tesla's awarded NEVI sites in Colorado, the average cost per stall is ~$45,000. With each Supercharger station typically featuring 10 stalls, the cost per site amounts to about $450,000. This estimate includes expenses for hardware, construction, and grid upgrades. With a $500 million budget, Tesla could install about 1,111 new Supercharger stations (worldwide I think?). For context, In 2023, Tesla installed more than 1,270 new Supercharging stations in the US alone. This leaves the door wide open for other charging networks to pick up the slack and accelerate their growth.

First time founder going to a big conference like Collision Conf? Here's how I (a 5'1 female tech founder) prepare: 1. Split your team up into who is going to be running the booth (my Marketing Manager) and who will be networking (me). Most of the good Founder-Funder networking happens at after parties so you do NOT want to have the same group of people starting really early at the booth and going all day into the night. Also, have a wingman for parties to double both as bodyguard and to riff off of for networking. 2. Pre-book meetings. As a Victoria, BC-based founder I don't make my way out to Toronto that often, so #collisionconf is an excellent excuse to meet up with target investors, ecosystem partners, etc. in the area. I'll almost always take a juicy meeting over attending a conference session. To get meetings booked, I leverage the heck out of my existing supporters (angels, mentors, etc.) by saying "I'll be here these dates, who should I talk to for X topic?" 3. Eat, sleep, and get your business done. Even as an extravert, being "on" for these kind of events all day is exhausting. I try and limit my regular work as much as possible, for my entire team, and I don't even bother to try and fit in touristy things as I almost always end up skipping them for a power nap. 4. Pack strategically. Send any physical materials in advance or get them printed at the location. Don't dress too formal (suits, etc.) or you'll look like a lawyer/banker. Don't go too casual either if you're in leadership. I opt for a fun shirt & simple trousers, or fun trousers & simple shirt. As I'm typically shoulder-height in most crowds, I like a platform or heel too, but I have to balance that out with comfort if I'm standing and walking a lot.
