What happened in Charlotte, North Carolina is truly heart-wrenching. While our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved, we must also re-think our approach. The video of the special operation team members and a civilian hunkering down during the battle is difficult to watch. One individual is out in the open at the fence. It begs the question, where is all the technology? And were they not properly prepared? It's 2024, and we have proven for a decade now that mobile robotics and its data are life-saving assets. Many special operation teams across the US utilize aerial and ground robotics ahead of a raid and high-risk warrant arrest. Having situational awareness and the entire team being part of the Tactical Bubble provides a lot of needed data points and is another solid means of communication. It's impossible to say if drones in the air, ground robotics deployed, and the entire team being on TAK, would have changed the outcome. But it would have improved the odds and, in a high-risk situation like this, I would want all the odds I can get. What are your thoughts? In this demonstration, is this good or bad? Clearly the customer believed that they needed a lot of camera coverage. Even if the cameras were cheap, the solution for sure cost more than it ever needed to. Who's at fault? A respectable integrator will caution you the moment you're about to waste money. You can get better coverage with fewer cameras when they are spec'd and installed appropriately. This was an example of what not to do for more reasons than the cost of the system. If these are IP cameras, the customer is noticing a very slow network speed if anything is shared on that network. It may also require yearly software subscription licenses, which makes maintenance very expensive. Granted, the integrator may have indicated these problems to the customer, and the customer may have made the decision to ignore that advice as well... that does happen too unfortunately.
