InterWebz: What's your suggestion for a cloud-based custom database, front-end, & workflow tool? #SalesForce #DataCloud is always mentioned but it's not inexpensive. #Microsoft #Dynamics365 may have something but hard to tell. My fellow Talamel principals and I are building digital assets to remove some of the friction between payors & delivery of care partners. We have the shell in MS-Access but will need workflow capabilities. Trivial to port into #Azure but no workflow.

Why would Salesforce want to buy Informatica? I had a very interesting conversation with my old friend Nimish Mehta about the rationale behind the rumored deal. One reasonable answer that we worked out is that Benioff believes with Informatica in its portfolio Salesforce can become the ultimate source of clean, well-governed data for building enterprise AI models. It's an interesting play for a company that needs to be in the innovation game well beyond CRM if it wants to stay relevant: right now CRM, like ERP, is in danger of commoditizing towards a "fit to standard" set of processes, with real innovation coming at the edges. There are a couple of interesting "edge" plays for CRM and ERP: one is to go deep into industry-specific functionality -- which I personally think is the one of the most interesting and strategic edge opportunities for customers. Another is to go after advanced enterprise AI -- so far more hype than reality, particularly because of the dirty data problem. (There's a couple of other "edge" capabilities that would be good plays for ERP and CRM vendors -- business networks and solving the siloed end-to-end process problem-- but I'll leave that for other posts.) Salesforce can't buy its way into industries (or networks) without spending the kind of money that its activist investor masters are likely to try to stop. But it can try to buy its way into the AI data problem by buying Informatica at a much lower cost and making a play to be the solution to AI's massive data quality and governance problem. It's certainly a problem worth trying to solve -- otherwise AI's enterprise potential will die the death of a thousand hallucinations. The only problem is that Salesforce's salesforce isn't really equipped to sell data management solutions -- as I stated earlier their traditional buyer doesn't really know or care about master data. Informatica's sales team could help, but that would require them to step up to a much larger and more strategic deal than they are generally used to doing - because in order for this acquisition to work for Salesforce the average deal size of Informatica has to grow significantly. Normally, in accretive acquisitions the buying company's salesforce helps make that uptick happen. But if Salesforce is the buyer it will mean Informatica's team will have to take the lead. So while I think solving the AI data problem is a worthy goal, and buying Informatica to do this is a worthy part of solving this problem, I'm not sure Salesforce is the right company to make this potential acquisition reach its full potential. Judging from the "meh" response on Wall Street, I'm probably not alone.

A talented BA with the knowledge of functional business and Salesforce features should not be overlooked if you imagine the desired outcome to include just the right amount of context, and detail for the team architecting the solution and providing the level of detail important for the engineers to build the solution. This is a very good article for anyone who wishes to assess and possibly improve their own company's success in pre-build activity

More fun with investigating Salesforce's Settings metadata objects... Out of roughly 127 Settings metadata types I've now been experimenting with, two Settings types account for 84% of the total memory used when parsing all retrieved org settings types to a JSON data structure. Can you guess the culprits? AddressSettings and ForecastingSettings I'll confess those are areas of the platform I don't have a ton of experience with, but it seems rather crazy for that much configuration to have to get duplicated to each Salesforce org? Here's the data...

The #DrupalCon Portland’s Opening Keynote, aka Driesnote, brought exciting news for all the community, but... I’ve been reflecting on the path ahead for Drupal and how it’s evolving to meet enterprise needs and stay competitive. The project has evolved significantly, and the Starshot initiative can help reduce friction for newcomers, making it even easier to sustain innovation. However, the keynote lacked topics on decoupled implementations and modern front-end tools, Drupal Headless, API-first CMS, and improvements in decoupled integrations.
