Does the NISO's enabling legislation even allow it to promulgate a standard that is known to be illegal? Todd Carpenter 3) The signatories are a Murderer's Row of organizations representing every aspect of commercial book publishing including agents, authors, and publishers from most parts of the world. In short, it looks to an outsider like the problem is that this group was convened with the wrong charter and the wrong membership. As Ms. Halperin suggests, it's a pity the process was allowed to waste two years of everyone's time.

I'm also leading an Industry Breakout session at #SSP2024 called "Publishing Systems that Enable Collaboration and Build Community" at noon on Wednesday! The publishing process has become highly automated, with online systems handling much of the coordination and communication between authors, editors, reviewers and other professionals involved in the scholarly publishing endeavor. Technology is not just used to keep the publishing process organized, tools and microservices are now being seamlessly integrated into workflows, increasing the efficiency for all participants in the value chain, assisting our shared infrastructure, and ultimately shortening the time from submission to publication. Online publishing systems also offer the opportunity for organizations that serve the scholarly researcher to collaborate, providing important services directly to the researcher and publisher during the publishing process. Nonprofits that provide industrywide standards are integrated into the workflow alongside commercial companies that build new and innovative products. Suppliers of PIDs, like ORICD and Ringgold, help connect people, places and money. Those PIDs are used by services the OA Switchboard to facilitate funding recognition. Initiatives like the STM Research Integrity Hub and AAMC’s Convey help reinforce trust in science by identifying potential fraud in research. Companies like Prophy help editors increase diversity in their reviewer pool, helping to relieve the crisis in peer review. All of these organization are made more efficient through integration with automated workflows. In this session, we will discuss how a modern, modular microservice-based workflow system can be designed to encourage collaboration. Each of the above-named services will discuss how they are involved in building scholarly community. Together we will show how our scholarly shared infrastructure is made more accessible when these services are easily available to researchers, editors and publishers, through online systems.

Most online newspaper researchers do not recognize that when searching for a word, a term, a name, etc., that they essentially are searching against a database that has been built based on whether a very small section of a newspaper is black or white. It is the formation of these dots that may look like a letter, and a collection of letters, a word. https://lnkd.in/g364R-CB
