A successful "ugly" brand needs the culmination of a few factors to get it right. The art of the "ugly" shoe lies in mastering comfort, marketing, and cultural resonance. Cosmetic Chemists + Product Dev Pros: it’s your time to shine. I’m not a scientist and despite working with many skincare brands throughout my career, I’m not about to voice my opinion on what the ultimate solution is to all of this because I don’t know it. I’d like to hear from you 🎤 I will say that as marketers, we have a responsibility to continually educate ourselves on the the product development process and to have consumers’ best interest in mind at all times. We’ve got to advocate and push pack regarding certain practices that are prevalent in the beauty and wellness space. I really enjoyed Kirbie Johnson’s Instagram story on this current recall situation with Suntegrity Skincare. I’m not sure how long it will be viewable, but she spoke on the issue that there is no unified definition of “clean” beauty, which is deeply confusing to consumers and problematic in itself. We all know that misinformation is rampant in our industry. Well, they certainly do it less than before Consumers do though Why are some retailers have such a global audience and others don’t Let’s look at the US Brands in Sephora have a much wider organic global reach than brands in Ulta Because tourists or foreigners living in US tend to know the Sephora brand Looking on 小红书 little red book which is a very important Chinese social platform Brands in Sephora USA have much more discussion around them compared to brands just in Ulta. Why is this… Sephora is better known in China On Red book Sephora has over 90,000 mentions vs. Ulta who has only 6,500 Sephora is present in many Asian markets but it is not the shopping destination that it is in the US so this is not a key reason Most of the top US brands in the premium space start with Sephora so Chinese consumers discover brands who are mentioned by influencers or through friends and family who live in the US and so often these brands are found in Sephora So as a brand know that if you are not in Sephora US then you can actively cultivate the Chinese living in the US or target the travelling Chinese to give your brand a kick start. #ulta #sephora #chinabeauty #global

The business model of 'professional' skincare companies, which rely on spas or derm offices as gatekeepers for their products, piqued my curiosity after being tasked to rebrand one. To ensure a comprehensive understanding of this particular market, I researched comps (comparative product lines) exclusive to spas and derm offices, their formulations, marketing strategies, and the targeted customer. What is "Professional Skincare"? What is "Clinical Skincare"? What are "Cosmeceuticals"? Why are some skincare products only available through spas or derm offices? I kept coming up with the same answer - MARKETING. WARNING: This next section will be unpopular with estheticians and dermatologists. It was disturbing to see how much of the professional skincare sector operates under the guise of exclusivity and heightened efficacy, a perception shaped mainly by marketing strategies rather than scientific evidence. While profitable for the spa/derm industry, it is misleading and unfair to consumers.  Terms like 'Cosmeceuticals' and 'Clinical Skincare' are marketing jargon, not scientifically recognized categories. This raises questions about the credibility of their claims and the need for such exclusivity. I also began to see similarities to an MLM business model. Many professional skincare brands require you to engage with an authorized seller. These authorized sellers only allow you to purchase the products once you become their client (after a consultation or a service). So, you're forced to pay $$$ for services before you're granted access to NON-PRESCRIPTION skincare products? That's bullsh*t. #MyTwoCents Prescription skincare (Tretinoin, Altreno, Finacea, etc.) are the ONLY products that require gatekeeping. Over-the-counter (OTC) skincare, sold exclusively at a spa or derm office, is not prescription-level, even when clinical studies back their efficacy.  These brands sold behind velvet ropes are no more effective than readily available Direct-To-Consumer (DTC) skincare products backed by the same clinical data.
