"I'd like to invite you to take a look at the job I've posted. Please submit a proposal if you're available and interested." This was the message I received from Upwork. While growing up, I always had a passion for scriptwriting and storytelling. When I entered university, I pursued science but continued writing. After university, I decided to take some courses on writing to hone my craft and I'm glad I did. Now it was time to start bidding for jobs. As the proverb says, "A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work" and I was determined to make my dream come true. After exhausting all my connects on Upwork, I purchased more connects to bid for jobs, but still, none was forthcoming. Pitching for jobs almost made me feel depressed. I had to leave the Upwork marketplace to focus on my offline activities. In February, I received an email from Upwork informing me that I had been awarded 10 connects, in addition to the 2 connects I already had, I submitted a proposal for a scriptwriting job. The first bidder submitted a proposal for 16 connects, while I submitted the least amount, which was 12 connects. I waited for emails regarding the other proposals I've submitted, but I didn't receive any. I kept grinding, and despite feeling tired, I maintained my focus and worked to enhance my Canva creativity. Towards the end of March, I received a message on WhatsApp from someone who said I was referred to him by another person to write storybooks for children. He also provided me with the age grade, we negotiated the pay, and he agreed to proceed with the job. I took the job so seriously and even added a cover page and some pictures to go with the stories using Canva. He was very pleased with the outcome and offered me additional work. Fast forward to April 30th, around 3 pm, I felt prompted to check my emails, and the above👆 email from Upwork popped up. This is the same job for which I submitted a proposal using 12 connects. To say I was happy, would be an understatement, I felt elated, and my writing journey began. Hey everyone, I understand that you may feel like giving up, but I urge you to keep pushing forward. Even when it seems like things will never improve, I can assure you that when the time is right, it will. Remember, na who give up, lose. I'll keep grinding, I'll keep keeping on, until I get to the banquet table prepared for me by my King.

Let's be real, as content writers we can get a little...intense sometimes. We obsess over every word, every detail, wanting everything to be flawless. Well, guess what? I once got SO caught up in making my work perfect, I almost missed a deadline. Here's the thing: I was working on a project. I researched everything, planned it out perfectly, and rewrote every sentence until it was perfect. The problem? I spent SO much time polishing every tiny detail, I totally forgot about the deadline. Weeks of work, wasted. Here's the lesson: √√ Deadlines Matter Respect deadlines, even if you set them yourself. Getting something done is better than having something perfect that's way too late. √√ Take a Break Sometimes, you need to step away from your work. Come back to it later with fresh eyes, and you might see things differently. √√ Done is Better Than Perfect Your first draft probably won't be a masterpiece. And that's okay! Focus on getting the main ideas down first, then you can polish later. It's great to want to create awesome content, but don't let the pressure of perfection hold you back. Make a plan, manage your time, and don't be afraid to hit that "post" button even if it's not quite perfect. How to get more highly-qualified, highly professional applications from writers who are excited to work with you: Include your pay rate in the job listing AND be prepared to pay those people what they're worth. There are many other things you can do, of course - talk about your industry, audience, how much work you expect and how you collaborate with writers. But the best writers will think applying for your opportunity is a waste of time if they don't know you're willing to pay what they're worth.

Just encountered yet another scammer trying to get my information as a freelance writer. This one is posing as a Human Resources Vice President for the company Vastly.com, formerly thecompany.com, which does seem to be a legitimate company. The man, “Curtis Kibbey” requested an interview with me via Microsoft Teams, and sent me a full description of the proofreader job I would be doing for $35 an hour. (Why is it always $35?) I did my due diligence and everything seemed fine until the interview was conducted via messaging? Why not just hop on a call? And then the reassurance that I would be supplied with everything I needed to work from home. Why would I need special equipment to proofread documents? Then when I asked to hop on a call, I was met with rude and insulting language. Ding. Ding. Ding. Red flag. So, watch out all my fellow freelancers out there! Are you asking for advice or permission? Sometimes a “how” question really means “am I allowed?” Here are some common ones I hear on strategy calls with other ghostwriters and freelancers: ➡ "How can I quit my job and go full-time as a freelancer?" ❇ Translation: "Am I allowed to have the career I want?" ➡ "How can I raise my rates?" ❇ Translation: "Am I allowed to ask for more?" ➡ “How can I find time to write for myself?” ❇ Translation: “Am I allowed to be a successful author too?” ➡ "How do I get my client to stop calling me on the weekends?" ❇ Translation: "Am I allowed to say 'no'?" ➡ "How can I go on vacation when I have all this work?" ❇ Translation: "Am I allowed to put my happiness first?" Friends, stop hiding behind the "how" and start giving yourself permission NOW. Our desires and dreams aren’t just whims to put off until the “important stuff” gets done. They ARE the important stuff.
