I read a lot of posts about companies advertising for freelance positions with full-time expectations, but no benefits. The people writing those posts are annoyed by those company expectations. And they're not wrong. But they are wasting time. Those posts are bottom-of-the-barrel work that isn't worth our time or attention. In the history of modern work, there has never been a better time to be self-employed. Thanks to the internet, our possibilities and potential are limitless. So my advice to freelancers (not you asked, but if you're still reading) is this: ignore those posts and spend your energy creating the perfect job for yourself. —Reach out to companies that are the perfect fit for your skills and abilities. —Show them exactly how you can help them grow. —Repeat that process every day until you're so busy with referred work that it never even crosses your mind to look at job boards. now THIS is a good question! 🤓🍿 This person is used to being a Staff Editor and not a Freelance Editor. When you're on staff, you know who's paying you. When you're freelance, you don't. SO 😂 the first person to pay you reserves your time. That's all there is to it. 🤷♂️ When somebody else contacts you, you tell them you aren't available until X date. You would LIKE to do the work for them but somebody else has reserved your time. There is no obligation for a Freelancer to always be available. In fact when I first started, most of the people I know were PERMALANCERS, meaning that even though they called themselves Freelancers, they weren't available at all to be booked on the fly. They would be available like months from now! 😂 ==== If you're going to do a Retainer For Access, that's well and good. If a client's going to suddenly ask you for something, they have to pay you to be on deck for that immediate request. Otherwise, use Day Rates (I don't do that) and on the day that a particular client paid for, you work for that client. If on the other hand the deal you made was to finish a project for a client before a deadline, that's what you have to do. Any other work you accept can't interrupt that because your reputation will plummet and you won't have a career anymore.

When I started out I wasn't sure how freelancing would look. I didn't know if I could weather the non-stop networking required to keep jobs flowing in. I've unwittingly always chosen careers that require me to be out hawking my wares. As an actor it drove me crazy, the push to "network." Actors are fed this meal so often they start to get jumpy. No day is just a day, it's all opportunity and potential. It makes socializing a mercenary event. I thought writing television pilots would spare me, but the call to be out shilling for yourself is as loud. Who do you know? Who could you know? Who do you know who knows someone who might know someone who could do something for you? It's all--ick. It's not how I wanted to build my freelance business. And I haven't had to. If you're wondering if there's a path that looks more like collaboration, like an in-house writer hired on a freelance basis, that has some predictability and regularity: there is. If you have an eye for strategy, if you aren't afraid to speak up when it comes to angle, tone, or purpose. If you can turn things around quick and say yes way more than you say no, you'll find clients who want to integrate you. Wrap you in their organizational blanket. Osmose you. That's my favorite way to be. Happily osmosed. Often, organizations who need freelance writers need people they can bring into the fold, someone who can familiarize themselves with process, who gets along with the team, who can predict needs and even advise on next steps. I don't think I did this deliberately, but in hindsight I looked more for people than for projects. Is this company doing work that I know I can add value to? Then I tried my level best to make good on the value added, and built from there. There are companies out there who understand what a freelancer can bring to their team and will treat you as such. When you find them, you get to exhale, just a little. #HowItCanLook

Work-Life Balance: While office hours are fixed, a full-time job may offer better separation between work and personal life. Choosing What’s Right for You: Ultimately, the decision between a freelance and a full-time job depends on your career goals, lifestyle preferences, financial needs, and risk appetite.
