About the organization: HELPS International’s mission is to provide enduring programs of practical, social and spiritual value to the people in the developing world through a system of partnership and mutual responsibility.

The HELPS’ journey started in 1981 during Guatemala’s internal conflict. HELPS was incorporated in 1984 and its programs have since developed into an integrated developmental philosophy. Currently the program is an integrated program involving four main areas of education, healthcare, economic development and home transformation utilizing award-winning ONIL products.

Having joined the Board of Management (as a volunteer) at the YMCA at White Rock in January 2009, I began my service as a contributing member of the Communications and Community Support committee. My first initiative was to co-chair a fundraising golf event. Over time, I worked with the committee members to develop partnerships with the local media and business community to evangelize the work of the YMCA.

From February 2013 to January 2014, I had the privilege to serve as Chairman of the Board of Management, working with 35 talented and dedicated community members to support the mission of the YMCA at White Rock. Among other things, we are engaged in a capital fundraising campaign to raise $13 million for our new 38,000 square foot facility. In this initiative, I have immensely enjoyed further connecting with my community and meeting amazing donors who support the YMCA's new facility.

We raised a net of $16,000 in 2007 and a net of $26,000 in 2008.

  • On the Relationship Between Meaning and Work and Personal Identity

For my PhD dissertation project, I conducted qualitative research with 25 men and women between the ages of 22-65 (average age 43) across the nation to learn how they experience their work and its relationship to their personal identities. For my PhD dissertation project, I conducted qualitative research with 25 men and women between the ages of 22-65 (average age 43) across the nation to learn how they experience their work and its relationship to their personal identities. Using a hermeneutical, phenomenological, interpretative description method, five “modes of engagement” emerged to describe the relationship people experience between their work and personal identities. Since graduation in 2005, I’ve shared these results in various workshops and presentations, and participants seem to readily understand and relate to one of these five “modes of engagement.”

After several years of people asking, “These are interesting results, what’s next, and how do I apply this stuff at work,” I finally decided in March of 2012 to embark on a much bigger research design to further validate and develop what I discovered in the dissertation research. As such, I set out to interview 115 men and women between the ages of 18 and 74, this time across 20 various industries that mostly fall into what Richard Florida terms “the creative class” of professionals, creative people, and service professionals. I have completed the data collection, performed an analysis of 2,800 + pages of interview transcripts to discover emergent patterns and themes, and discerned 15 “modes of engagement.”

I am now in the process of sharing the overall patterns and individual results with the 115 participants to get their feedback on descriptive fit, and then co-author Dr. Owen Lynch and I will write the overall results of the project into a book. Stay tuned!
