Poverty is a harsh reality that most Guatemalans endure, but it is crucial to understand its root causes to break free from its grip. Most working women in Guatemala start small informal businesses out of necessity, as they lack traditional employment opportunities. At the same time, women also bear the majority of household and childcare responsibilities, limiting their ability to work and earn money. Over the past 15 years, Namaste has worked with 5,000 entrepreneurial women in Guatemala to provide them with the training, education, and loans needed to achieve financial security. On World Indigenous Peoples Day, our team Namaste Direct & Fundación Namaste Guatemaya is reflecting on the beautiful, diverse Maya communities we serve. With over 20 Maya dialects spoken in the country, Guatemala is a living testament to the enduring legacy and diversity of its indigenous people. We are proud to support Maya women on their paths to their economic security. As part of our ongoing efforts, we are in the process of translating our educational Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) video library into Kaqchikel and K’iche to ensure that our culturally relevant training resources are accessible to those who can benefit from them the most. Today and everyday, we feel fortunate to play a role in advancing the status of indigenous women in Guatemala.

🤲Although gender inequality is a global challenge, it is particularly problematic in Guatemala, where the culture of machismo and gender-based violence are daily challenges that women face. When women cannot earn or manage their own money, they become dependent on others and have no control over their lives. This often leaves women in violent situations from which they cannot escape. This is why Fundación Namaste Guatemaya exists: to economically empower Guatemalan women so they can grow profitable businesses, achieve financial security, and pursue their dreams. Economic empowerment of women is about Access and Control over their actions. When women achieve their goals, their lives improve, their confidence grows, and they set positive examples for girls and women in their communities. The key is in the economic empowerment of women. When we economically empower women, they thrive, their families thrive, and communities flourish. ______________________________ 🤲Aunque la desigualdad de género es un desafío global, es particularmente problemática en Guatemala, donde la cultura del machismo y la violencia de género son desafíos diarios que las mujeres enfrentan, cuando las mujeres no pueden ganar o administrar su propio dinero, se vuelven dependientes de otros y no tienen control sobre sus vidas. Esto a menudo deja a las mujeres en situaciones violentas de las que no pueden escapar. Es por ello que Fundación Namaste Guatemaya existe para empoderar económicamente a las mujeres guatemaltecas para que hagan crecer negocios rentables, alcancen seguridad financiera y persigan sus sueños. At Namaste, we are very excited because our mentors have started facilitating workshops on women's economic empowerment. The workshops are led by our mentors and are specially designed for women who want to have financial security. Last week, our mentors conducted workshops at (school) for students and their mothers, which will help these women learn about financial management, saving, investing, and how to make economic decisions that benefit them in the long term. Meet The Effect, a remarkable group of high school students from the Bay Area dedicated to understanding and addressing global poverty 📚 Namaste has had the privilege of collaborating with this impressive club since 2008. These aren't your average teenagers—they're changemakers! Over the past 16 years, over 120 students have come to Guatemala to witness Namaste’s program in action. Through creative fundraising efforts, students from The Effect have raised over $120,000 to support Guatemalan women in Namaste Direct's program in breaking generational cycles of poverty and build brighter futures. 🌟👏 ________________________________ Conoce a The Effect, un extraordinario grupo de estudiantes de secundaria del Área de la Bahía dedicados a comprender y abordar la pobreza global 📚 Namasté ha tenido el privilegio de colaborar con este impresionante club desde 2008. In order to combat poverty in Guatemala, women must have access to the skills and resources to participate in the economy and make and manage their own money 🌷 📚 That's why Namaste is committed to expanding our Women's Economic Empowerment (WEE) education to serve thousands more women throughout the country. Last week, we were proud to convene 40 women from the department of Retalhuleu to join us for a full day of learning, discussion, connection and strategizing ways to achieve economic security. We were also proud to include a group of high school students and rotarians from the Bay Area who raised money for this event and were able to learn from these powerful ladies about what women’s economic empowerment means to them. Not only did the participants learn about the correlation between gender inequality, self-esteem, and poverty, we worked with them to define tangible goals for themselves, and learn to create and manage their own budgets to figure out what they need to earn and save to bring their dreams to life. Participants came away from the event with new friendships, a new sense of optimism about what's possible, and actionable plans to achieve economic independence. When women come together and support each other, magic happens! ____________________________ Para combatir la pobreza en Guatemala, las mujeres deben tener acceso a las habilidades y recursos necesarios para participar en la economía, hacer y gestionar su propio dinero. Es por eso que Namaste está comprometido a expandir nuestra educación de Empoderamiento Económico de Mujeres (WEE) para servir a miles de mujeres más en todo el país. La semana pasada, nos enorgulleció reunir a 40 mujeres del departamento de Reu para un día completo de aprendizaje, discusión, conexión y estrategias para lograr la seguridad económica. También nos enorgulleció recibir a un grupo de estudiantes de secundaria y rotarios que recaudaron dinero para este evento para aprender de estas poderosas mujeres sobre lo que significa el empoderamiento económico de las mujeres para ellas. No solo las participantes aprendieron sobre la correlación entre desigualdad de género, autoestima y pobreza, sino que trabajamos con ellas para definir objetivos tangibles para sí mismas y aprender a crear y gestionar sus propios presupuestos para descubrir cuánto necesitan ganar y ahorrar para hacer realidad sus sueños. Las participantes se fueron del evento con nuevas amistades, un nuevo sentido de optimismo sobre lo que es posible y planes concretos para lograr la independencia económica. ¡Cuando las mujeres se unen y se apoyan mutuamente, sucede la magia!
